• How do I know what adjustments students on my course will need?
The Student Disability Service creates a 'Learning Profile', in discussion with each
student and for each student, which lists the recommended adjustments needed to
enable him or her to study effectively. Once this has been agreed, key staff in the
Schools, library and Academic Registry (as appropriate) are informed of the
adjustments that are needed.
Although it is impossible to anticipate every adjustment that might be needed, there
are many things that can be done to make teaching materials, lectures etc. more
accessible to everyone, thus reducing the number of individual adjustments required.
• What is meant by the term “Teachability”?
Teachability was originally the names of a national Scottish Higher Education
Funding Council project that aimed to promote and maximise the inclusion and
effective participation of disabled students in higher education. Its goal is to ensure
that curricula are made accessible to disabled students so that that they can
participate fully in their programme of study while at university. It is also anticipatory,
so that courses and programmes of study are made 'accessible by design' to all
students.
Teachability is now used synonymously with accessibility.
