support structure highlighted by these reviews has formed part of good practice
showcased at the 2011 Inspiring Teaching Conference and at the first good practice

Recall days while students are away from the University on practice placement are
held on a regular basis and provide an opportunity for students to raise issues or
provide feedback on their placement experience. The student group is brought
together for information and support sessions, and there is an opportunity for

A policy has been adopted of maintaining the same professional/academic tutor over
the two honours years of the programme (except where sabbaticals occur) so that
students have continuity of learning support and a stronger relationship with a

The input of postgraduate students into quality systems and structures for
enhancement is being addressed by improving the postgraduate representation on

At the start of a placement period, the receiving agency, students and practice
teachers submit a working agreement which sets out the understanding between all
participants about the nature and content of the placement experience. The working
agreement serves as a reference point for monitoring the student’s learning
experience and includes any arrangements or support required for students with

A review panel consisting of University staff and placement providers reviews all
placements at interim stage and at their conclusion. The panel is responsible for
commenting on the quality and adequacy of the placement learning opportunities and
assessment. A sample of materials considered by the review panel is sent to the
External Examiners, and the panel also reports to the Board of Examiners.

Feedback from students is sought at various points during the year, covering self
assessment, peer assessment, and facilitator assessment as relevant to the delivery
of teaching. An automated reminder system within the Edinburgh Electronic Medical
Curriculum encourages a very high response rate. Evaluation of teaching is
translated into a traffic lights system for every module and all hospital attachments.
