- - The committee has identified the specific challenges around accessible information and mental health as two key priorities. Subgroups 1. Technology Sub-Group Jessie Patterson, School of Divinity, has taken over as convenor and the focus has been on communication so students are aware of what forms of support are available to them. An Assistive Technology factsheet detailing the forms of assistive technology available has been created to supplement the information available on the Information Services Accessibility website. An awareness raising event was held in the Playfair library with the manufacturers of various forms on assistive technology to give people a chance to see the latest products and test them out. In addition, guidelines on procuring accessible software have been created and shared with procurement. 2. Specific Learning Difficulties Sub-Group Melanie Scott, Assistant Director, Disability Office, is convenor of this group which has focused on developing constructive dialogue between schools and the Disability Office to ensure effective implementation of reasonable adjustments. Discussions are informing liaison and dialogue between Disability Office staff and the Schools to ensure that recommended adjustments are implemented effectively and in a timely fashion. 3. Mental Health Sub-Group Ronnie Millar, Director of the Student Counselling Service has taken over as convenor from his predecessor, Susie Jackson. The group has been revising the University’s Mental Health Code of Practice , revisiting the guidelines for dealing with students showing disruptive behaviour and has identified the Univesity rector as a potential advocate for mental health issues within the University. 4. Access and Facilities Sub-Group David Casey, Estates and Buildings, is the Convenor of this group. This group has been influential in making various adjustments across campus such as the installation of a hoist in the Informatics Building, automated door openers at St Leonards land and widening a door in Old College. Current projects include trying to get Schools to take greater responsibility over disabled user fire egress, securing funding for a University-wide audit of building access information and challenging listed building legislation (possibly in partnership with the Equality and Human Rights Commission) to have a ramp installed at Teviot. 5. Accessible Information Sub-Group Viki Galt, Information Services, is the Convenor of this group. The group has met on four occasions. The group has proposed alterations to the prospectus to make it more accessible and these have now been implemented. The branding guidelines for the University have been changed to include the need to offer documents in alternative formats. Guidance is being finalised on producing accessible course handbooks and accessible presentations. In addition an informal audit of the university website was undertaken. 3
