Jouer pour les Canadiens procure une pression
constante, surtout si l’on a vu le jour dans la
région de Montréal. Imaginez le stress que l’on
peut ressentir si, en plus, on est le frère cadet
de Maurice Richard. Tout un défi, n’est-ce-pas?
Qu’à cela ne tienne, Henri Richard a répondu aux
attentes en jouant plus de matchs que quiconque
dans l’histoire du Tricolore. De plus, aucun autre
joueur dans l’histoire de la LNH peut se targuer
d’avoir gagné 11 coupes Stanley, un exploit
réalisé au fil d’une carrière de 20 saisons.
Les débuts d’Henri Richard ont été précurseurs de
grands moments dans la riche histoire du Bleu
Blanc Rouge. En 1956, alors qu’il complétait sa
saison recrue, l’équipe a gagné la première de ses
cinq coupes Stanley consécutives.
Pendant que le «Rocket » marquait des buts à
un train d’enfer, le «Pocket Rocket » s’affirmait
comme l’un des meilleurs fabricants de jeu.
Ce tenace joueur de centre de cinq pieds sept
pouces a mené la ligue pour les mentions d’aide
en 1957-1958 et en 1962-1963. Mais il savait
aussi faire bouger les cordages, surtout lors
des moments cruciaux. Son palmarès inclut
deux buts ayant assuré la coupe Stanley aux
Canadiens, chaque fois à l’étranger. Après avoir
fait scintiller la lumière rouge en prolongation
dans le sixième match contre Detroit en 1966, il
a répété l’exploit lors de la septième rencontre de
l’ultime série contre Chicago en 1971.
Ce 17 e capitaine a porté fièrement le «C »
sur son gilet de 1971 à 1975, saison où il a
accroché ses patins. Cette année-là, il a reçu le
trophée Bill-Masterton pour sa persévérance et
son dévouement au jeu.
Les Canadiens ont immortalisé son numéro 16
le 10 décembre 1975. Richard a été intronisé au
Temple de la renommée en 1979, rejoignant du
même coup son grand frère.
SAISON RÉGULIÈRE/REGULAR SEASON
As if playing for the Canadiens as a native
Montrealer isn’t pressure enough, imagine doing
so as the Rocket’s kid brother. Unfazed, Henri
“The Pocket Rocket” Richard responded by
simply playing more games with the Canadiens
than any other skater in team history and of
course by winning a truckload of Stanley Cups.
Richard’s first season with the Habs would
prove to be a sign of things to come as he
won the Stanley Cup in 1956. It marked the
beginning of a Canadiens’ dynasty that would
see Montreal roll to a league-record five straight
championships. No other player boasts more than
the 11 Cups the lifelong Canadien would pile up
over his 20-year NHL career.
While his brother was among the game’s most
prolific goal scorers of all-time, Richard emerged
as one of hockey’s top playmakers. The tenacious
5-foot-7 centreman led the league in assists
in both 1957-58 and 1962-63, but that is not
to say he didn’t score big goals during his All-
Star career. Richard is one of the few players
to have, not one, but two Cup-winning goals on
his resumé. After notching the Game 6 overtime
clincher that sank the Red Wings in 1966, he also
scored winner in Game 7 of the 1971 final versus
the Black Hawks.
The Habs 17 th captain proudly wore the “C”
from 1971 through his retirement in the spring
of 1975, when Richard also received the Bill
Masterton Trophy for his perseverance and
dedication to the game. The Canadiens then
immortalized his number 16 on December 10,
1975, as it joined his brother’s number 9 high
above the Forum ice. Richard was then reunited
with the Rocket one more time upon his induction
to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1979.
