of <strong>the</strong> longevity of anti-Jewish sentiment in history,<br />

few had any sense of how this related, compared<br />

<strong>and</strong> contrasted with Nazi antisemitism. As a result,<br />

<strong>the</strong> distinctive characteristics of Nazi antisemitism<br />

are not grasped by most <strong>students</strong>.<br />

Student explanations for ‘Why <strong>the</strong> Jews?’<br />

displayed (<strong>and</strong> are undermined by) not only<br />

insufficient levels of substantive <strong>know</strong>ledge, but<br />

also underdeveloped conceptual underst<strong>and</strong>ing.<br />

Students tend to hold flawed ideas of causation,<br />

as is captured by <strong>the</strong> positioning of Hitler as <strong>the</strong><br />

primary reason for <strong>the</strong> murder of <strong>the</strong> Jews.<br />
