Culturally Appropriate Community-Based Participatory Research Methods<br />
with an Engaged Urban American Indian/Alaska Native Community<br />
OBJECTIVES—Participants will learn:<br />
1. To describe the key components of an urban community-based participatory research<br />
2. To explain why the community-based participatory research approach is relevant and important in a cultural context<br />
3. To describe specific examples of strategies utilized <strong>for</strong> conducting community-based participatory research within<br />
an Urban American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) community setting<br />
4. How to utilize community-based participatory research data <strong>for</strong> continuous quality improvement<br />
5. To implement approaches <strong>for</strong> interagency collaboration and stakeholder involvement<br />
This Institute will focus on sharing culturally responsive strategies utilized <strong>for</strong> conducting community-based<br />
participatory research with an Urban AI/AN community. This approach involves employing community engagement<br />
strategies with a focus on culture to facilitate the development of local evaluation studies, continuous quality<br />
improvement ef<strong>for</strong>ts, and strategies <strong>for</strong> interagency collaboration and stakeholder involvement.<br />
The in<strong>for</strong>mation and strategies to be highlighted are based on experience in implementing the Portland, Oregon metro<br />
area Nak-Nu-Wit system of care. System of care leaders and evaluators will share approaches to evaluation, quality<br />
improvement, stakeholder engagement, and interagency partnerships to support the provision of culturally appropriate<br />
services and supports. Concrete strategies <strong>for</strong> carrying out these activities will be shared to guide other communities in<br />
implementing similar approaches.<br />
Specific topics to be covered include:<br />
• Community-Based participatory research<br />
• Strategies <strong>for</strong> creating local evaluation studies<br />
• Community engagement in research processes<br />
• Continuous quality improvement strategies<br />
• Approaches <strong>for</strong> collaboration across agencies<br />
Participants will have an opportunity to engage in conversations regarding how they may implement the communitybased<br />
participatory research approach within their own communities. The faculty team will offer the perspectives of a<br />
youth and her mother, both of whom have been involved in leadership roles in the Nak-Nu-Wit Evaluation Advisory<br />
Committee. The perspectives of a system of care leader, clinical supervisor, and evaluators are also included on the<br />
faculty team.<br />
