suggest that verse falls in the category I call glyphic writing.. This
includes things like panels of cartoons PowerPoint slides and. writing
which consists of a number of subelements which may even all. be
textual but which have a carefully spatial relationship to each. other..
Nonglyphic writing consists of text arranged in a reading order so. long
as the reading order is maintained the spatial relationship of. the
individual elements is immaterial because there really is only. one
element the text.. Does that buy you anything. As an author I can break
a short story down into a fairly fine level. of structure where there's a
distinct spatial relationship between. the elements. I'll break it down
into scenes and outline the. structure of each scene and so on. To you
the reader though you're. unaware of much of that structure.. In reverse
as reader with limited knowledge of (or desire to learn. of) poetry
structure there ain't no spatial relationship in there. it doesn't rhyme.
(And funky spacing is just pretentious crap.). There are also people who
demonstrate an inability to read comics.. They don't know where to
look what to read first how to decipher. the language. Any spatial
relationships are lost on them.. I might submit that there are strong and
weak glyphic elements of all. these examples some items tend more
toward one end of the spectrum. than the other. Glyphic elements must
should or may (in descending. imperative) have presentation attached.
The more things tend toward. may the less authorial control remains
over the presentation and. the more it tends toward being a single
effective element the text.. An example might be a comic strip. The
graphic content of the panel. must be fully retained as presented by the
author. The textual. content (word balloons etc.) should be retained the
structural. connection is important but matters of whether the text is in
word. balloons listed below the panel or verbalized are typically of.
lesser import. The order of the panels must be preserved but the.
horizontal nature may be changed (in some case it at least should if.
must must be retained though depends on the individual panel pairs)..
