Ëากใครที่กำาลังจะวางแผนไปเที่ยวพม่า และ<br />
ลองค้นหาคำาว่า ‘ท่องเที่ยว’ และ ‘พม่า’ ใน<br />
เสิร์ชเอ็นจินแล้ว ผลลัพธ์ที่ปรากฏขึ้นมา<br />
หากไม่เป็นภาพของบอลลูนลอยละล่องอยู่เหนือ<br />
ทะเลเจดีย์แห่งพุกามยามอาทิตย์อัสดง ก็คงจะเป็น<br />
ภาพของเจดีย์ชเวดากองทองอร่ามแห่งย่างกุ้ง น้อย<br />
นักที่จะมีภาพของเมืองมัณฑะเลย์ปรากฏให้เห็น<br />
แม้จะฟังดูย้อนแย้ง แต่หากมาพิจารณาดูดีๆ<br />
แล้ว อดีตราชธานีแห่งนี้ก็ดูจะไม่ใช่ตัวแทนของ<br />
ประเทศพม่า หรือที่ปัจจุบันเป็นที่รู้จักกันในนามว่า<br />
เมียนมา (Myanmar) สักเท่าไหร่ ด้วยความที่ปิด<br />
ประเทศมานาน พม่าจึงดูจะเป็นตัวแทนของความ<br />
งามแบบไม่เหมือนใครที่ชวนให้หวนนึกถึงอดีตอัน<br />
ผ่านพ้น แต่มัณฑะเลย์กลับเป็นเมืองกึ่งเก่ากึ่งใหม่<br />
หรือเป็นเมืองที่จอร์จ ออร์เวล นิยามไว้ในหนังสือ<br />
เรื่อง Burmese Days ว่า “ช่างขัดแย้งในตัวเองเสีย<br />
เหลือเกิน” เพราะในขณะที่ฟากหนึ่งของเมืองเต็ม<br />
ไปด้วยโบราณสถานที่สำาคัญทางประวัติศาสตร์ ใน<br />
ตัวเมืองที่กลับเต็มไปด้วยความสมัยใหม่ ทั้งห้าง<br />
สรรพสินค้าขนาดใหญ่ ร้านขายโทรศัพท์มือถือและ<br />
อุปกรณ์อิเล็กทรอนิกส์ ยังไม่รวมถึงโรงแรมขนาด<br />
เล็กสุดโมเดิร์นพร้อมกับห้องพักแอร์เย็นเฉียบที่<br />
กระจัดกระจายอยู่ทั่วเมือง ความไม่สอดคล้องนี้อาจ<br />
เป็นปัจจัยสำาคัญที่ทำาให้เมืองแห่งนี้จึงไม่ค่อยอยู่ใน<br />
ลิสต์ของนักท่องเที่ยวที่เดินทางมาพม่านัก และนี่<br />
อาจจะเป็นเหตุผลที่ว่าทำาไมมัณฑะเลย์จึงเป็นเมืองที่<br />
ไม่ควรพลาด หากคุณอยากได้ประสบการณ์การ<br />
ท่องเที่ยวประเทศพม่าที่ไม่เหมือนใคร<br />
Most people planning a trip to Myanmar<br />
start by typing in the word “travel” and<br />
“Myanmar” into a search engine. The<br />
first photos that show up are likely dreamy<br />
hot air balloons floating over the sea of<br />
pagodas in Bagan, or the grand golden<br />
stupa of Shwedagon in Yangon. Rarely does<br />
the mysterious city of Mandalay appear.<br />
Although it sounds contradictory,<br />
this former capital city is not quite<br />
representative of Burma, or Myanmar<br />
as we call it today. Myanmar is a country<br />
that has long been closed, and invites<br />
nostalgia of the past. Mandalay however,<br />
seems semi-urban with a mix of new<br />
and old. George Orwell once wrote in his<br />
book Burmese Days, “Mandalay is rather<br />
a disagreeable town,” and today the<br />
disagreements often arise from ancient<br />
historical sites drowned by modern<br />
department stores and mobile phone shops.<br />
There are also an increasing number of<br />
small, air conditioned hotels scattered<br />
throughout the city. This inconsistency<br />
may be the reason why Mandalay falls off<br />
most traveller’s lists, but it’s also the main<br />
reason to visit and experience something<br />
truly unique.
