A MULTI-CULTURAL CITY
แม้จะทรงอยากสร้างเมืองที่รุ่งเรืองไปด้วยวัฒนธรรม
ดังเช่นในอดีต แต่พระเจ้ามินดงทรงตระหนักดีว่า
ท้ายที่สุดแล้ว พม่าคงไม่อาจต้านทานอิทธิพลจาก
ภายนอกได้ พระองค์จึงเริ่มการปฏิรูปไปพร้อมๆ
กับการสร้างบ้านแปลงเมือง โดยทรงโปรดให้
มิชชันนารีชาวอังกฤษเข้ามาตั้งโรงเรียนในมัณฑะเลย์
ได้ โดยพระองค์เองก็ได้ส่งพระราชโอรสไปเรียนที่
นั่น นอกจากนี้ พระองค์ยังต้อนรับชาวจีนมุสลิมจาก
ยูนนานให้เข้ามาอาศัยและตั้งรกรากในมัณฑะเลย์
ด้วย ยังไม่รวมถึงชาวจีนศาสนาอื่นที่อพยพเข้ามา
อยู่ในพื้นที่หลังจากเกิดเหตุสงครามกลางเมืองใน
ประเทศจีน มัณฑะเลย์จึงมีกลิ่นอายของวัฒนธรรม
หลากเชื้อชาติ โดยเฉพาะวัฒนธรรมจีนยูนนานที่
สะท้อนออกมาผ่านทั้งการใช้ภาษาและอาหารต่างๆ
โดยเมนูในร้านอาหารส่วนใหญ่นั้นจะมี 3 ภาษา
คือ พม่า จีน และอังกฤษ อาหารจีนยูนนานใน
มัณฑะเลย์นั้นขึ้นชื่อว่าอร่อยไม่แพ้ใคร
Although he wished to build a city rich
with cultural heritage like its predecessors,
King Mindon realised that at the end,
Burma had to give in to external
influences. So while building Mandalay
city, he started the reformation. British
missionaries were allowed to build schools,
and the King himself sent his children to
learn the English language. Muslim Chinese
people from Yunnan as well as Chinese
of other religions who immigrated due to
the civil war were also welcomed to live
in the city. Mandalay became a cultural
melting pot and was largely influenced by
the Yunnan culture. The Chinese elements
are reflected through language and
gastronomy. Menus in most restaurants
have 3 languages, Burmese, Chinese and
English, while Yunnan food in Mandalay
can be considered some of the best in
Myanmar.
