มัณฑะเลย์นั้นถือกำาเนิดขึ้นในยุคที่พม่ากำาลังพยายามต้านทานอิทธิพล
ของอังกฤษ เนื่องจากอมรปุระ ราชธานีเก่านั้นอยู่ติดกับแม่น้ำาอิรวดี
เมืองแห่งนี้จึงเสี่ยงต่อการถูกอังกฤษโจมตี พระเจ้ามินดงแห่งราชวงศ์
คองบองจึงตัดสินพระทัยย้ายราชธานีมาอยู่ที่ทุ่งมัณฑะเลย์ซึ่งอยู่ห่างจาก
แม่น้ำาประมาณ 5 ไมล์ และทรงพระราชทานนามให้ราชธานีใหม่ตาม
ชื่อของภูเขามัณฑะเลย์ ภูเขาศักดิ์สิทธิ์ที่ตั้งอยู่ทางทิศตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ
ของตัวเมือง ตำานานกล่าวว่าพระพุทธองค์และพระอานนท์ได้เสด็จ
มาประทับพักที่นั่น พระพุทธองค์ได้ประทานพุทธทำานายไว้ว่า
เมื่อพุทธศาสนาครบ 2,400 ปี จะเกิดมีเมืองใหญ่เป็นศูนย์กลางของ
พุทธศาสนาขึ้นที่เชิงเขาแห่งนี้ ด้วยความที่ทรงเป็นพุทธศาสนิกชนผู้มี
ความศรัทธาแรงกล้า พระเจ้ามินดงจึงทรงกระทำาให้พุทธทำานายเกิด
เป็นความจริง การย้ายราชธานีจึงดูสมเหตุสมผลทั้งด้านกลยุทธ์การ
ปกครองและด้านความเชื่อทางพระพุทธศาสนา แล้วหมู่บ้านเล็กๆ
ที่เคยเป็นจุดแวะพักของคาราวานพ่อค้าจากจีนที่จะเดินทางต่อไปยัง
อินเดียก็ขยายใหญ่ขึ้นเรื่อยๆ

Mandalay was formed during Burma’s struggles to fight British
influence. Since the previous capital Amarapura was situated
next to the Irrawaddy river, it was easily reached by British
troops. King Mindon then decided to move the capital five
miles from the river to Mandalay. The new capital city was
named after Mandalay Hill, a sacred pilgrimage site located
on the north-eastern part of the city. Legends proclaim that
Buddha and his disciple Ananda arrived at the hill, and it
was prophesied that when Buddhism reached its 2,400 year,
the Buddhist capital would be founded here. A devout
Buddhist himself, King Mindon sought to fulfill the prophecy
by moving the capital there. The relocation seemed rational
in terms of politics and faith. What was once a small village
that was a stopover for Chinese merchant caravans grew into
a thriving city.
