The Traces of Prosperity
King Mindon was a progressive king. He initiated
using gold and silver blocks as currency
exchange, founded a mint, developed land
and water transportation systems, and invited
European experts to expand the mining and
forestry industries, but one of his masterpieces
was the Mandalay Palace that spans over the
space of 413 hectares.
Since the location was a deserted plain, King
Mindon could use the space as much as he
pleased. Most original buildings were created
from teak wood, some of which were relocated
from the previous palace in Amarapura. There
were several reasons behind the majestic palace,
and one of which was the King’s attempt to
express his power to the Europeans and restore
his people’s trust and morale after Burma was
defeated in the second Anglo-Burmese war.
The palace ground was in the space of four
square kilometers surrounded by 8-meter high
brick walls. Each side of the walls have 3 gates.
Outside the wall is a moat that is 75-meters
wide and 4-meters deep. During the second
World War, the Mandalay Palace was used as
a Japanese army base and was burnt to the
ground by the Allies. Most of the buildings
seen today are replications of the original ones.
The only original building left is the
Shwenandaw Monastery, the former King
Mindon’s apartment, that King Thibaw, the son
of King Mindon and the last King of Burma,
relocated to the outside area of the palace.
Once covered with gold, the monastery is now
unique with its exquisite wooden structure
made from teak wood.
