effects of light and masses. Those are
the elements that create the “feeling”,
the atmosphere, in short, the beauty of
a room or a shape, independently from
the current style and fashion. They are
logic of the floor plan or by the fanciness of the
facade! Architecture is the art of space, it is a
matter of three dimensions!
I am fully aware that this is the longer and
harder way to success. An architect looking for
the things in a way that you are sure somebody
will like to look at it long after you have gone.
Great examples of architecture have always been
those that people still talk about after hundreds
of years. Ask yourself if what you are doing is
elements that are independent from
time; they produce lasting beauty. Why
does nobody ever talk about “sustainable
beauty”?
It can be done! But it is more
difficult than designing a fancy dress.
It is a highly specialized science, an art
that cannot be learned in a moment.
It takes a lot of knowledge and skills
to “produce” lasting beauty. It takes
patience, experience and accuracy,
and it takes professors who are able to
explain this art. For too long, we have
judged architectural quality either by the
timeless beauty may never see recognition in his
lifetime. But it is the only way to the truth of beauty,
and to the improvement of the general aesthetic
culture: The more often people will experience
substantial beauty, less they will be content with
anything less. It is my dream that one day people
will complain and protest when architecture does
not enchant over and over again, independently
from the season’s fashion. It is a dream, and
dreams are dreams because they can never become
a full reality, but each little patient step in the right
direction is something worthwhile in the end.
What would be my advice to the
architecture student? All you have to do is to do
aiming at the moment, or at something that
will not change in time, at a substance that is
able to last. You will feel immediately when this
happens, and you will experience the satisfaction
that can be had from this feeling. When this
happens, you know you are doing something for
mankind, and not only for yourself, and believe
me this is a feeling that outweighs any kind of
quick applause and financial gain. Only when
you create something that can stand in time, you
will be immortal in a way, it is only then that
you fully exist as an architect, as a human being
in fact. Then you will have found your role in life
and in the world.
