Kansai Air Terminal in Osaka, Japan, Piano<br />

tells of asking the client to visit the site. There<br />

was a moment of embarrassment, but with<br />

great courtesy the Japanese took Piano on a<br />

boat trip. At a certain point on the open sea,<br />

they asked where the airport was to be, and<br />

(approximately 5.5 square miles). “With Tom<br />

Barker, a mechanical engineer with Ove Arup<br />

& Partners,” says Piano, “we investigated<br />

streams of air, from which the form of the<br />

terminal’s roof would emerge. In cross<br />

section, the roof is an irregular arch (in reality<br />

a series of arches of different radii), given this<br />

their host replied, “Here.” Since Osaka had no<br />

room for an airport, the authorities decided<br />

to build an artificial island for it in the bay.<br />

The island would be 15 square kilometers<br />

shape to channel air from the passenger side<br />

of the terminal to the runway side without<br />

the need for closed ducts. Baffles left open to<br />

view guide the air flow along the ceiling and<br />
