of infectious disease, immunization,<br />

dental health, child nutrition, menu<br />

planning, sanitary food handling,<br />

prevention of injury, emergency<br />

preparedness and evacuation,<br />

providing services for children<br />

with special needs and child abuse<br />

prevention, identification and<br />

reporting responsibilities. This course<br />

meets the California Commission on<br />

Teacher Credentialing requirements<br />

for the Child Development Permit<br />

understanding the parenting<br />

process from infancy to adulthood,<br />

parenting in diverse culture, various<br />

life styles and family structures,<br />

alternatives to biological parenting and<br />

understanding high risk families.<br />

in developing skills in working<br />

with and educating parents. The<br />

course provides the framework for<br />

preparing students who are interested<br />

Students will participate in developing<br />

lesson plans, class schedules, and<br />

leading parent discussion seminars.<br />

Topics covered include: leadership<br />

techniques, structuring parent<br />

education classes considering<br />

theoretical perspectives regarding the<br />

family, parent education topics, and<br />

resources for parents. This course<br />

meets the California Commission on<br />

This course provides an overview<br />

of human growth from conception<br />

to adolescence. The theories of<br />

development relevant to life through<br />

the teenage years are introduced<br />

and the social, emotional, cognitive<br />

and physical aspects of these early<br />

stages of life are addressed. This<br />

course is appropriate for students<br />

preparing for a profession working<br />

with children and their families or<br />

those interested in furthering their<br />

understanding of child and adolescent<br />

development. This course is also<br />

designed to meet the Department of<br />

Social Service Classification DS1 and<br />

applies toward the State of California<br />

Title V requirement for the Child<br />

Childhood Education<br />

This course is a survey of educational<br />

programs for children from birth<br />

to age eight, the implementation<br />

of those programs and their<br />

historical foundations. Emphasis<br />

is placed on facilitating and<br />

supporting child learning utilizing<br />

the essential elements of Early<br />

Childhood Education. Topics<br />

include developmental theories<br />

and characteristics, the importance<br />

of play, promotion of appropriate<br />

social behavior, guidance and<br />

interactions strategies, analyzing the<br />

relationship between observations,<br />

planning, implementation and<br />

assessment in developing effective<br />

teaching strategies and the family and<br />

community contexts of learning and<br />

development. This course is directed<br />

towards prospective administrators,<br />

teachers, aides, and school-age<br />

caregivers planning careers in private<br />

for-profit or funded programs. This<br />

course is also designed to meet the<br />

State of California Title 22 Department<br />

of Social Service Classification<br />

This introductory course presents<br />

current concepts in childhood<br />

curriculum development and<br />

implementation. The student<br />

will design curriculum based on<br />

observation and assessment of<br />

young children to support play<br />

and learning using developmental,<br />

inclusive and anti-bias principles in<br />

collaboration with families to support<br />

all children; demonstrate knowledge<br />

of the teachers’ role in evaluating best<br />

practices and apply understanding of<br />

children’s learning and development.<br />

This course is meant for students<br />

who plan to create and implement<br />

children’s educational programs. This<br />

course is also designed to meet the<br />
