Advanced Composition and Critical<br />
Thinking<br />
Prerequisite: ENGL 101 with a grade of<br />

This advanced composition course<br />
is open to all students who have<br />
successfully completed ENGL 101<br />
and is designed for those who expect<br />
to transfer to four-year colleges or<br />
universities. Students will read and<br />
write extensively, while applying<br />
critical thinking skills and research<br />
techniques. Students will demonstrate<br />
these abilities in advanced composition<br />
as they research and write a series<br />
of argumentative essays, which<br />
demonstrate the ability to analyze<br />
issues, evaluate positions, and argue<br />
persuasively through clear, concise<br />
prose. This Honors section is open<br />
to all students who have completed<br />
ENGL 101 with a grade of C or better.<br />
Students will be expected to analyze<br />
issues in more depth and write on<br />
them at greater length than they would<br />
in a non-honors section.<br />

The course is intended for students<br />
who have the ability to assume<br />
responsibility for independent work<br />
and to prepare written or oral reports<br />
and/or appropriate projects; who<br />
possess a 2.5 overall grade point<br />
average and/or a 3.0 grade point<br />
average in a major, or for whom the<br />
instructor feels an exception should<br />
be made. Directed Studies may be<br />
developed from any topic arising<br />
from or related to a course of study<br />
that will result in developing depth<br />
and breadth in that subject area.<br />
The project title will vary with each<br />
individual project. Students will be<br />
expected to meet on a regular basis<br />
with their faculty sponsor and submit<br />
a final report or project. One unit of<br />
credit will be awarded for 48 hours<br />
of directed studies, 6 hours of which<br />
must be with an instructor. A student<br />
may take this course for a maximum<br />
of 4 units within a discipline, but may<br />
not accumulate more than a total of 12<br />
units college wide.<br />

of both verbal and written skills.<br />

expressions, listening, vocabulary,<br />
reading and writing. These are taught<br />
at an entry level. This course is offered<br />
on a pass/no-pass basis and is not<br />

their English vocabulary and practice<br />

Basic Vocabulary<br />

This course is designed to help ESL<br />
students learn meanings, forms,<br />
uses, and pronunciations of 200-250<br />
English words not presently in their<br />
vocabulary. Special emphasis is given<br />
to examining words in context, parts of<br />
speech, and inflections. This course is<br />
offered on a pass/no pass basis and is<br />
not applicable to the degree.<br />

ESL Basic Grammar<br />

This is an introductory computerbased<br />
skills course for English as a<br />
second-language students. Using<br />
self-paced CD ROM software and<br />
workbook reinforcement, students<br />
learn basic English grammar while<br />
focusing on verb structures. This is a<br />
non-degree applicable course and is<br />
taken on a pass/no pass basis. There<br />
are 54 hours of language lab work per<br />
semester to be arranged.<br />

This is a beginning composition class<br />

and word usage are studied in various<br />
rhetorical modes. This is a nondegree<br />
credit course, will be offered<br />

ESL 28C is a speaking, listening and<br />
pronunciation course intended for<br />
students who need further practice in<br />
spoken English and/or have difficulty<br />
understanding native speakers<br />
of English in academic and other<br />
situations. Its purpose is improved the<br />
pronunciation, articulation, speed and<br />
comprehension of non-native speakers<br />
of English. The course focuses on<br />
sounds in isolation, the blending of<br />
sounds in phrasal elements and the<br />
production of sentences incorporating<br />
correct intonation, accent, speed and<br />
rhythm.<br />
