The course is intended for students<br />

who have the ability to assume<br />

responsibility for independent work<br />

and to prepare written or oral reports<br />

and/or appropriate projects; who<br />

possess a 2.5 overall grade point<br />

average and/or a 3.0 grade point<br />

average in a major, or for whom the<br />

instructor feels an exception should<br />

be made. Directed Studies may be<br />

developed from any topic arising<br />

from or related to a course of study<br />

that will result in developing depth<br />

and breadth in that subject area.<br />

The project title will vary with each<br />

individual project. Students will be<br />

expected to meet on a regular basis<br />

with their faculty sponsor and submit<br />

a final report or project. One unit of<br />

credit will be awarded for 48 hours<br />

of directed studies, 6 hours of which<br />

must be with an instructor. A student<br />

may take this course for a maximum<br />

of 4 units within a discipline, but may<br />

not accumulate more than a total of 12<br />

This course is an introduction and<br />

broad view of the entire field of theatre<br />

arts. The practice and theory of the<br />

following will be explored: costume,<br />

stage and lighting design, acting,<br />

directing, playwrighting, criticism,<br />

play structure, theatre architecture<br />

and producing. Included will be a<br />

brief historical overview. At least<br />

one field trip to an outstanding<br />

theatre production will be required.<br />

Recommended for all students.<br />

Required for Theatre Arts majors.<br />

This course is designed for the student<br />

with an interest in history or theatre.<br />

It will cover humanity’s relationship<br />

with theatre from primitive tribal<br />

cultures through today’s large<br />

musicals and blockbuster hits. The<br />

class explores the way societies’<br />

religious, political and social structures<br />

were presented and shared through<br />

their theatre. The class will investigate<br />

major plays, playwrights and historic<br />

theatrical techniques through lectures,<br />

discussion, field trips and films.<br />

This course is designed to introduce<br />

the student to the history of theatrical<br />

experience from primitive times to<br />

the present. An examination of the<br />

physical theatre and methods of<br />

staging drama from the days of the<br />

cave dwellers to the theatre of the<br />

avant-garde and the present. The<br />

approach includes the works of the<br />

major playwrights and the relationship<br />

of the theatre to the historical, political,<br />

and religious events of the times.<br />

areas of theatre, film and Television,<br />

culminating in the presentation of<br />

scenes from contemporary dramatic<br />

literature.<br />

This course gives the student<br />

continuing theory and practice in<br />

the techniques of acting. Emphasis<br />

is placed on exercises culminating<br />

in the presentation of scenes from<br />

contemporary dramatic literature, and<br />

the student will study techniques for<br />

performing Shakespeare, and they will<br />

also present a one-act play.<br />

stage scenery, lighting equipment,<br />

sound equipment, and properties; the<br />

organization and management of stage<br />

activity and stagecraft terminology.<br />

The student will study the aesthetics<br />

and practical application principles of<br />

set design, sound design and lighting<br />

design. Students are assigned a specific<br />

crew responsibility that directly relates<br />

to a college theatrical production.<br />

phases of scene production including<br />

placement, manipulation of stage<br />

scenery, lighting equipment,<br />

sound equipment, properties, the<br />

organization and management of stage<br />

activity, and stagecraft terminology are<br />

covered. The students will do further<br />

study in the aesthetics and practical<br />

applications principles of set design,<br />

sound design and lighting design.<br />

Students are assigned a specific<br />

crew with added responsibility that<br />

directly relates to a college theatrical<br />

production.<br />

laboratory experience, technical<br />

phases of scene production including<br />

construction, painting, rigging,<br />

placement, and manipulation of<br />

stage scenery, lighting equipment,<br />

sound equipment, and properties; the<br />

organization and management of stage<br />

activity; and stage craft terminology. The<br />

directing, dramatic structure, student<br />

will do further study in the advanced<br />

aesthetics and practical applications<br />

and principles of set design, sound<br />

design and lighting design. Students<br />

are assigned a specific crew head with<br />

added responsibility that directly relates<br />

to a college theatrical production. This<br />

course may be taken once and repeated<br />

once for credit.<br />
