Students will be taught the history of ideas, how to “do philosophy” themselves, and to appreciate the benefit of such activity. 3 Units 54 Lecture hours PHIL 110 Critical Thinking Prerequisite: ENGL 101 Advisory: READ 023 or appropriate assessment Transfers to: UC, CSU This course is appropriate for those seeking to hone their analytical and writing skills, and for those seeking to fulfill major or general education requirements. This basic course in the techniques and tools of formal and informal reasoning is designed to give students the ability to know when to accept or reject certain lines of reasoning, or whether judgment should be suspended with regard to arguments. The use and abuse of language will be considered, major fallacies will be thoroughly discussed and certain techniques will be examined for evaluating whether or not purported arguments are plausible, probable or valid. Emphasis on the application of critical thinking for effective writing will be reflected in the frequency, scope, and nature of course writing assignments, which will be evaluated with regard to both content and form. We will examine the foundations of ethics, and consider application to contemporary moral concerns. 3 Units 54 Lecture hours PHIL 124 History of Philosophy: Ancient Advisory: ENGL 101 or appropriate assessment; READ 023 or appropriate assessment Transfers to: UC, CSU This introductory level course is for those interested specifically in the earliest stages of Western philosophy. This course will examine a variety of philosophical movements, sampling from the “Ancient” periods of Greece and Rome. Philosophers to be studied include the Pre-Socratics, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics, Epicurus, and the Skeptics. Beyond a study of the figures and key ideas, we will discuss the early view of philosophy as a “way of life,” and consider how these movements were intended to transform the lives of those who followed them. 3 Units 54 Lecture hours PHIL 126 History of Philosophy: Modern Advisory: ENGL 101 or appropriate assessment; READ 023 or appropriate assessment Transfers to: UC, CSU This introductory level course is for those interested specifically in the “Modern” period of Western Philosophy. This course emphasizes the Rationalist and Empiricist movements. This course is appropriate either as a part of a broader sequence of philosophical studies, or for those interested in applying philosophical technique to current subjects of interest. Both moral, and non-moral topics will be addressed.
