State, CSU Fullerton, CSU Stanislaus, Chapman<br />

University, Pomona <strong>College</strong>, Pitzer <strong>College</strong>, Occidental<br />

<strong>College</strong>, La Sierra University, Loyola Marymount,<br />

Pacific University (Oregon) and Whitman <strong>College</strong> (state<br />

of Washington).<br />

To complete the Honors Transfer Program, students<br />

must take six honors courses, achieve at least a 3.2<br />

grade-point average for all transferable college courses<br />

taken, complete the required general education<br />

courses as well as all prerequisite work for their major<br />

required by the school to which they plan to transfer.<br />

Additionally, honors students must schedule two<br />

meetings with their honors counselor each semester.<br />

Benefits of the program include small classes, closer<br />

contact with professors, interaction with <strong>Rio</strong> <strong>Hondo</strong>’s<br />

top students, challenging course work, and personalized<br />

honors counseling. Interested students should fill out<br />

and submit the Honors Transfer Program application<br />

published each semester in the Class Schedule. See<br />

the Honors Transfer Counselor in the Counseling<br />

Department for more information.<br />

Orientation<br />

Orientation familiarizes and acquaints students with<br />

important college policies and expectations, as well<br />

as the range of services and programs available. It<br />

is recommended that all new students participate in<br />

orientation. A schedule of orientations is available<br />

in the Assessment Center, room LR130 and on the<br />

Assessment web page.<br />

PUENTE Program<br />

The Puente project is a one-year writing, counseling<br />

and mentoring program. The emphasis is on Chicano/<br />

Latino writers and authors. The goal of the program<br />

is to increase the number of students who transfer<br />

to four-year colleges and universities. For more<br />

Transfer Center<br />

The primary responsibility of the Transfer Center is to<br />

ensure a transfer culture by providing comprehensive<br />

support services and resources as well as counseling<br />

services to empower students seeking to transfer to<br />

four-year colleges and universities.<br />

The Transfer Center provides up-to-date information<br />

about transferring to four-year institutions to students,<br />

counseling faculty, and staff, as well as coordinates<br />

various activities, resources, and services that support<br />

the transfer process. The Transfer Center is designed<br />

to assist students with the process of transferring to<br />

four-year colleges and universities; public, private and<br />

out-of-state campuses.<br />

TRiO Programs<br />

Student Support Services – The Student Support<br />

Services Program, a federally funded TRIO Program,<br />

serves one hundred and sixty students. The purpose<br />

of this program is to prepare first-generation, lowincome<br />

and/or disabled students for graduation/<br />

transfer into four-year colleges and universities.<br />

Services include academic advisement, transfer and<br />

career information, tutoring, priority registration,<br />

student success workshops, educational and cultural<br />

activities, financial aid and scholarship information,<br />

cash-aid stipends and various other services. All<br />

services are free. Located in the Campus Inn, room<br />

CI 155, office hours are Monday-Friday 8:00 am<br />

to 4:30p.m., evening hours available. For more<br />

Upward Bound – The Upward Bound Program, a<br />

federally funded TRIO Program, serves sixty students<br />

from California, El Rancho, Pioneer and South El<br />

Monte High Schools. The purpose of this program is<br />

to prepare first-generation, low-income students for<br />

admission into and graduation from a four-year college<br />

or university. Services include academic advisement,<br />

tutoring, college preparation, Saturday and Summer<br />

Academic Academy’s, enrollment in <strong>Rio</strong> <strong>Hondo</strong><br />

<strong>College</strong> courses, educational and cultural activities,<br />

financial aid and scholarship information, cash-aid<br />

stipends and various other services. All services are<br />

free. Located in Campus Inn 155, office hours are<br />

Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., evening hours<br />

Veterans Services<br />

Veterans and Veteran Dependents are encouraged<br />

to take advantage of the counseling services and<br />

educational programs offered by <strong>Rio</strong> <strong>Hondo</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />

<strong>Rio</strong> <strong>Hondo</strong> <strong>College</strong> cooperates with the Veterans<br />

Administration and with the California State Bureau<br />

of Vocational Rehabilitation in helping veterans and<br />

their dependents to obtain the education necessary to<br />

realize their academic and vocational goals. <strong>Rio</strong> <strong>Hondo</strong><br />

<strong>College</strong> has been approved for the training of veterans<br />

and eligible dependents. Veterans and dependents are<br />

required to comply with Veteran Regulations Sections<br />

21.4135, 21.4235 and 21.4277 in regard to required<br />

attendance and progress that the student-veteran or<br />

dependent must meet in order to receive educational<br />

benefits under Title 38, United States Code.<br />

The Veterans Administration requires all entering<br />

students to be formally evaluated in writing for<br />

possible award of credit for previous training and<br />

experience. This applies to all students, full-time and<br />

part-time, degree and non-degree candidates. To<br />

prevent possible future interruption of educational<br />

benefits, it is essential that an official copy of all<br />

previous course work (college or service) be on file<br />

at <strong>Rio</strong> <strong>Hondo</strong> <strong>College</strong> and in the <strong>Rio</strong> <strong>Hondo</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />

Veterans Service Center located in the Campus Inn,<br />
