for students pursuing an associate’s
degree who do not plan to transfer
to a four-year school. Students
will consider the mathematics of
exponential growth and decay and
the use of logarithms as they relate
to investing and borrowing money
including compound interest,
credit cards, and installment loans.
Other topics include probability
and statistics, especially related to
gambling and insurance.
assessment
Prerequisite/Corequisite: ED 090
Transfers to: CSU
This course is designed for students
who seek to peer-tutor and students
who aim to tutor at elementary,
middle, high school or college. The
course will provide the student
with the skills to appropriately help,
explain, and assist others solve math
problems without assistance.
Prerequisite/Corequisite: MATH 103
Transfers to: CSU
This course is designed for students
who currently peer-tutor and
students who tutor at elementary,
middle, high schools or college. The
discussion will assist the students
with solving problems that occur in
tutoring situations and expand their
mathematical problem solving skills.
This course is designed for students
majoring in business and social
sciences. Topics will include:
modeling with linear equations,
(*Students will receive credit from UC
for only one of the following courses:
MATH 130 or MATH 130H.)
This course is designed for students
majoring in business, social sciences,
and life sciences. This course provides
an overview of descriptive and
inferential statistics. The students
learn to read, interpret and present
data in a well-organized way. This
includes frequency distributions,
graphs, measures of central tendency
and variability, correlation and
linear regression. While discussing
inferential statistics, the students
learn to make generalizations about
populations. This includes probability,
sampling techniques, confidence
intervals, and hypothesis tests.
Mathematics for Elementary Teachers
Prerequisite: MATH 070 or MATH
070D with a grade of “C” or better or
appropriate assessment
Advisory: ENGL 035 or ESL 198 or
Transfers to: UC, CSU
This course is designed to deepen and
extend the student’s understanding
of the foundations of the mathematics
taught in elementary school. Because
it is intended for the student preparing
to teach at that level, it frequently
refers to and uses materials and
methodology appropriate for students
at that level, but it is not a methods
course. The course is concept-driven
with an emphasis on problem solving.
Concrete manipulatives are used to
give meaning to abstract mathematical
concepts. Topics include numeration
and place value concepts, models
and algorithms for operations with
whole numbers, integers, fractions
and decimals, and the structure and
properties of the real number system.
MATH 141
Mathematics for Elementary Teachers
Prerequisite: MATH 060 and MATH
140 with a grade of “C” or better
Transfers to: CSU
Math 141 is a continuation of Math
140. Topics include probability,
statistics, informal geometry in two
and three dimensions, coordinate
geometry, measurement, similarity,
tessellations, constructions, and an
introduction to Euclidean geometry.
Manipulatives and appropriate
