As a result of taking this course<br />

students will be able to effectively<br />

put into practice in the classroom the<br />

appropriate early childhood<br />

education program. Emphasis will<br />

be placed on observing and assessing<br />

Demonstrating teaching competencies<br />

statement, goals and objectives for<br />

lesson plans, setting up the physical<br />

environment, the caregiver’s role,<br />

and the parent’s role. The unique<br />

challenges of organizing a home as a<br />

learning environment, dealing with<br />

multi-age groups, and small groups<br />

Educating Children with Special<br />

Needs<br />

This course will prepare students and<br />

parents to participate in the planning<br />

and implementation of programming<br />

for children with special needs. The<br />

course focuses on supporting the<br />

educational process of children with<br />

special needs within group settings<br />

utilizing multidisciplinary approaches<br />

that incorporate the family in the<br />

planning and implementation of<br />

programming. Topics will include<br />

assessment, diagnosis, appropriate<br />

placement, individualized program<br />

planning and educational approaches<br />

and adaptations. Criteria outlined<br />

by laws regarding Special Education<br />

and court rulings will be addressed<br />

along with the issue of program<br />

accountability. The course meets<br />

Directed Study: Child Development<br />

The course is intended for students<br />

who have the ability to assume<br />

responsibility for independent work<br />

and to prepare written or oral reports<br />

and/or appropriate projects; who<br />

possess a 2.5 overall grade point<br />

average and/or a 3.0 grade point<br />

average in a major, or for whom the<br />

instructor feels an exception should<br />

be made. Directed Studies may be<br />

developed from any topic arising from<br />

or related to a course of study that will<br />

result in developing depth and breadth<br />

in that subject area. The project title<br />

will vary with each individual project.<br />

Students will be expected to meet on a<br />

regular basis with their faculty sponsor<br />

and submit a final report or project.<br />

One unit of credit will be awarded for<br />

48 hours of directed studies, 6 hours<br />

of which must be with an instructor.<br />

A student may take this course for a<br />

maximum of 4 units within a discipline,<br />

but may not accumulate more than a<br />

with an introduction to the Chinese<br />

language and culture. The course<br />

stresses oral and written proficiency<br />

through fundamental use of Chinese<br />

receive an introduction to Chinese<br />

characters. In addition to classroom<br />

discussion, students receive intensive<br />

individualized oral-aural practice<br />

in the language laboratory via<br />

interactive websites, audio CDs, video<br />

programs, and CD ROMs. Various<br />

facets of Chinese history, culture<br />

and civilization will also be analyzed<br />

via cross-cultural comparisons. This<br />

course is intended for those interested<br />

in learning to speak Chinese as well<br />

as for those seeking a degree in the<br />
