gain experience in all three levels<br />

of the K-12 system. This course is<br />

intended for students considering a<br />

career in teaching. Two hours of off<br />

site classroom observations per week<br />

for a successful tutoring experience<br />

in reading at the elementary school<br />

level. Instruction will focus upon<br />

tutoring principles, stages of reading<br />

acquisition from pre-kindergarten<br />

through upper elementary school<br />

levels as well as materials, approaches,<br />

and activities that are appropriate<br />

for tutoring learners at these various<br />

stages of development. This course<br />

is designed for those students who<br />

intend to pursue a career in teaching at<br />

the elementary school level.<br />

This course provides the student<br />

with supervised experience tutoring<br />

reading in an elementary-educational<br />

setting (grades K-6). Participants will<br />

apply their knowledge of the reading<br />

process and tutorial skills in tutoring<br />

sessions with children at an off campus<br />

site. A weekly class meeting provides<br />

the academic component to the<br />

tutoring experience, reinforcing and<br />

expanding the application of concepts<br />

gained in the prerequisite / corequisite<br />

course. This course partially fulfills<br />

the requirements for students<br />

participating in the AmeriCorps grant<br />

program. This course may be repeated<br />

two times to increase student skill and<br />

tutoring experience.<br />

Literacy Skills I<br />

This is a beginning course designed<br />

for students with learning disabilities<br />

who have limited reading skills.<br />

Students will learn the meanings and<br />

the pronunciations of new words<br />

through the use of phonics. The class<br />

will cover vowel sounds, consonant<br />

sounds, word syllables, and word<br />

structure. Students practice strategies<br />

needed to encode and decode words<br />

to be successful readers. This is a nondegree<br />

credit course and is offered on<br />

a pass/no pass basis.<br />

with learning disabilities who<br />

need to improve basic reading<br />

skills such as dictionary usage,<br />

vocabulary development, and reading<br />

comprehension. Students practice<br />

specific learning strategies needed<br />

to compensate for diverse learning<br />

styles or deficits. This is a non-degree<br />

applicable course and is offered on a<br />

pass/no pass basis. All students are<br />

required to concurrently enroll in the<br />

one-unit reading lab, EDEV 021L.<br />

This course is a skills class designed<br />

reading tasks designed to complement<br />

the activities of their reading<br />

course. Students are required to be<br />

concurrently enrolled in EDEV 021,<br />

Literacy Skills II.<br />

Basic Arithmetic<br />

This course is a review of the basic<br />

principles and skills of arithmetic.<br />

The general areas of review are<br />

operations of whole numbers and<br />

percents. This course is designed for<br />

students with special needs to master<br />

basic computational skills, develop<br />

problem solving and arithmetic skills,<br />
