The Counseling faculty offers courses (COUN 100,<br />
101 and 151) which are designed to aid students<br />
in acquiring the skills, information, and personal<br />
awareness needed for college and career success.<br />
Counselors are available throughout the year for<br />
consultation. Counselors can assist students with a<br />
variety of issues: program planning, choosing a major,<br />
graduation requirements, transfer requirements to<br />
4-year colleges and universities, personal problems,<br />
scholarships and financial aid programs, tutoring,<br />
and communication with a professor. Students should<br />
make an appointment well in advance of registration<br />

Disabled Students<br />
Program & Services<br />
<strong>Rio</strong> <strong>Hondo</strong> <strong>College</strong> offers both classroom instruction<br />
and student support services for students with<br />
disabilities. Resource rooms and specialized staff<br />
are available to students who need disability-related<br />
services. This program is for all persons who<br />
have an American with Disabilities Act verifiable<br />
disability. The above are generally categorized, but<br />
may not be limited to those physically, learning,<br />
and psychologically disabled, hearing impaired,<br />
developmentally delayed, acquired brain injured, and<br />
the visually impaired.<br />
Services include specialized tutoring, interpreters<br />
for the hearing impaired, a braille transcriber and<br />
counseling. High tech equipment designed to assist<br />
DSP&S students to complete classroom assignments<br />
is available in a special high tech lab. Services do not<br />
include personal assistance with eating or hygienic<br />
needs.<br />
Other services provided for DSP&S students include:<br />
architectural barrier removal, special parking,<br />
priority registration, registration assistance, academic<br />
accommodation.<br />

GEAR UP<br />
(Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness<br />
for Undergraduate Programs)<br />
GEAR UP is a federally funded program designed<br />
to significantly increase the number of low-income<br />
students who are prepared to enter and succeed in<br />
postsecondary education. The <strong>Rio</strong> <strong>Hondo</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />
GEAR UP: I’m Going to <strong>College</strong> Program provides<br />
academic services and activities to students at Madrid<br />
Middle School and Mountain View High School in the<br />
city of El Monte.<br />

Destination Early<br />
Childhood Education<br />
Destination Early Childhood Education (DECE) is<br />
a program which exposes and prepares high school<br />
students on their path toward careers in Early<br />
Childhood Education, allowing them to begin their<br />
post-secondary education while still in High School.<br />
DECE helps students make connections from High<br />
School to college and careers.<br />

Extended Opportunity<br />
Program & Services<br />
In 1969, the Board of Governors for Community<br />
<strong>College</strong>s authorized the implementation of the<br />
Extended Opportunity Program and Services (EOPS) at<br />
Community <strong>College</strong>s.<br />
The primary function of the Extended Opportunity<br />
Program and Services is to identify and recruit<br />
economically and educationally disadvantaged students<br />
and assist them with academic supportive services in<br />
order to enhance college success, transfer to four-year<br />
institutions, and transition to the workplace.<br />
EOPS personnel provide outreach, counseling/<br />
educational advisement, and transfer assistance. The<br />
program also offers partial book vouchers and academic<br />
achievement grants.<br />
In addition, the EOPS Cooperative Agencies Resources<br />
for Education (CARE) Program assists single parent<br />
individuals on TANF, with dependent children, with<br />
additional academic and personal supportive services.<br />

Honors Transfer Program<br />
The RHC Honors Transfer Program offers students the<br />
opportunity to gain priority admission consideration<br />
and other transfer benefits at a number of colleges and<br />
universities. <strong>Rio</strong> <strong>Hondo</strong> <strong>College</strong> has signed honors<br />
