Integration of Generative <strong>Research</strong> and<br />

Sustainability into the Product <strong>Design</strong> and Development Process<br />

Senem Turhan has been working as a research and teaching assistant in the Department of Industrial <strong>Design</strong> at<br />

the Middle East Technical University since 2007. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. degree at the same<br />

university which focuses on generative research for the idea generation phase of the product design and<br />

development process. Her master thesis focused on the state of sustainable design education in the<br />

undergraduate industrial design programs in Turkey, particularly in the Department of Industrial <strong>Design</strong> at METU<br />

through exploring the emerging relationship between industrial design education and sustainability with regard<br />

to examples from all around the world.<br />

Cagla Dogan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial <strong>Design</strong> at the Middle East Technical<br />

University. She holds a PhD from the Faculty of Environmental <strong>Design</strong>, University of Calgary, Canada, and a<br />

BID and MSc in Industrial <strong>Design</strong> from the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey. Her designbased<br />

research is on product design for sustainability with a particular emphasis on integrated scales of design<br />

and product. She has presented her design research conclusions and insights at several peer-reviewed<br />

international conferences (EAD, ICSID, IDSA, Sustainable Innovation), and her publications include co-authored<br />

papers in the Journal of Sustainable Product <strong>Design</strong> and the International Journal of Product <strong>Design</strong>.<br />
