8.3.3 Biogas Production and Use
The amount of biogas available would not be enough to run all of the vehicles
on the island. If the available biogas is, instead, used for combined heat and
power generation in a suitable Stirling engine, a constant supply of around 7kWe
and 21kWth would be available during the winter, and around 4kWe and 12kWth
would be available during the summer. This amount on its own may not be
enough to merit the use of a district-heating scheme, but would be a useful
addition to other fuelled CHP production plant, where it would also not be
critical if the demand were to increase unexpectedly. This would, for example,
reduce the required wind turbine installed capacity in the previous example by
20 kW.
8.3.4 Biodiesel Production and Use
Biodiesel can be used to fuel both vehicles and diesel engines for CHP
production. The diesel engines can be used to follow the electricity demand,
