• Where CHP is used, the balance between the heat and electricity demand<br />

should be maintained as close as possible to the heat to electricity output<br />

ratio, to avoid wastage.<br />

• As there are many factors to be considered in the design <strong>of</strong> sustainable<br />

energy supply systems, the interrelationship between the various<br />

components can be complicated. This will vary with each different<br />

situation considered, which highlights the need for a decision support<br />

framework where different supply scenarios may be quickly and easily<br />

tried, in order to gain an understanding <strong>of</strong> these balances, and find the<br />

most technically suitable system design for a specific situation.<br />

This chapter discussed the various components that could be used to create a<br />

sustainable energy supply system, and how they could be combined to create an<br />

efficient and reliable system. As there are many complex operational factors to<br />

be taken into consideration when designing integrated systems to supply the<br />

electricity, heat, hot water and transportation needs <strong>of</strong> an area, the creation <strong>of</strong> a<br />

generic framework that would aid informed decisions would be valuable.<br />

Chapter 3 describes the various ways in which the design <strong>of</strong> sustainable energy<br />

systems has been approached.<br />
