With its private beach, ecologically sound architecture and friendly local staff, The Sitanunku Lodge proves that sustainable tourism can be served with a smile brussels airlines b.spirit! magazine may-jun { 10 }
We wanted to source everything from within a 4km radius { ECO TOURISM } the greening of the gambia How the tiny West African state became a world leader in sustainable tourism vague verte en gambie Comment ce petit Etat d’Afrique est devenu un leader mondial en matière de tourisme durable S L tand inside one of the domed dwellings at Sandele Lodge (Kartong Village, tel. +220 449 5887, sandele.com) on the southern reaches of the Gambian coast and you feel you could be in Istanbul, Mumbai or San Francisco. These cool, high, brick ceilings bring to mind both the vernacular architecture of Asia and the modern design trappings of the boutique-hotel circuit. The four-poster bed, personal plunge pool and sandy path to the beach all suggest worldly indulgence rather than ecological self-sacrifice. Yet the bricks in this building were made on site, from a concoction of local earth and seashells. The bedspreads were spun and woven by Gambian artisans. The bedsteads were fashioned from the reclaimed hardwood wedges that are usually discarded by local timber companies. The toilets, which have a pleasant odour of potpourri, are the composting kind, and the tap water is rainfed. The lodge’s remarkably reliable electrical supply is solar and wind generated. Sandele didn’t even have to clear the trees away from its grounds back in 2002 when the work began on the plot. Its founders, Geri Mitchell and Maurice Phillips, chose their seaside site from among three the local villagers offered them – they opted for it because an old mining operation had already cut away plenty of the forest, offering them good views of the coast. “I’ve always had a problem with the way tourism undermines local cultures,” says Mitchell. “We wanted to source everything from within a four-kilometre radius of the site, and we want guests to have a meaningful exchange with staff.” It all appears to be working. Having opened in 2007, Sandele enjoys high occupancy rates. The lodge’s employees, who largely live in the nearby village of Kartong, greet guests with the easy smiles of well-treated equals rather than the uncomfortable deference often found in African resorts. The Gambia generally, and places like Sandele in particular, brussels airlines b.spirit! magazine may-jun { 11 } es habitations en forme de dôme du Sandele Lodge (Kartong Village, tél.
