Above left: The Gambia's fine coastline remains one of its key natural assets Above right: Cycling is popular among both tourists and locals There are, of course, simple things that casual visitors can do to lessen their environmental impact. Any cyclist used to the bustle of a European city should be able to negotiate Banjul’s comparatively slow and orderly roads without much trouble. You can rent a decent mountain bike for about €5 a day from one of many modest stands in the tourist districts. They mainly offer fairly well-maintained mountain bikes that are suited to the country’s variable road surfaces. If you want to be a little more adventurous, and fancy giving something back to the locals when you leave, then buying a bike is also an option. There are plenty of second-hand bicycle shops along the Serrakunda stretch of the Kombo Coastal Highway, where prices range from €60 for a quality machine down to about €30 for a two-wheeled clunker. Additionally, a good selection can be found at the Jahanka Amsterdam Enterprise on the Bakoteh stretch of the Senegambia Highway (tel. +220 446 1805, amsterdament.com). This second-hand imported goods outlet was set up by a Gambian expat keen to get well-worn but functional Dutch goods into the hands of less fortunate countrymen. Among the well-kept racks of bikes lining the shop’s roadside lot we selected a nice old Royal Dutch Gazelle racing bike, paying, after some negotiation, just €33. Although its skinny tyres weren’t suited to The Gambia’s extensive network of dirt tracks, it was great on the 60-mile round-trip to Sandele Lodge, and delightful for an afternoon’s ride along the firm, low-tide sands of Kololi Beach. At the end of your stay, there are plenty of good ways to dispose of your bike. Educational charity Jole Rider distributes bicycles to worthy schools. Visit them at jolerider.org. Or you could just pass it onto a friendly, needy local. Jet travel and tourism are hard to come to terms with ecologically. Yet The Gambia, with precious few energy reserves, friendly national characteristics, picturesque parks and sandy beaches, has certainly proven that vacationers don’t have to ignore their own impact locally in order to have a good time. Brussels Airlines flies to Banjul four times a week { ECO TOURISM } brussels airlines b.spirit! magazine may-jun { 14 } Goodwin compares the practice of responsible tourism to more commonplace consumerism. “It’s like when you visit the supermarket,” he says. “You want something that will taste good, be safe and will have been ethically produced. Holidays are just the same.” (tel. +220 4461805; amsterdament.com).
See what happens when girls carry books all the way to the next generation. In the developing world, a girl doesn’t have a lot of options. At least not when it comes to her education. Thanks to Room to Read, more than 10,000 girls now have a future that includes the financial support and life skills needed to complete secondary school. That translates into higher wages, lower birth rates, and an end to the cycle of illiteracy. Educate yourself by visiting our website.
