Franck Kouassi, Pierre Atta, Luc Arsene Kouassi By day, Luc, Pierre and Franck swim at the Ivorian state swimming in Abidjan, but at night they dream of winning gold inside the Olympic Aquatics Centre in London. “It would be the pinnacle of our career”, says 20-yearold Franck Kouassi. Since the reopening of the state pool in Treichville, Abidjan, earlier this year they’ve been training almost every day, both there and in any private pools they can get access to. “With all that’s happened in Cote d’Ivoire over the past few years, it’s really had an impact on athletes trying to train in the country,” says Pierre Atta, 26, the swimming team captain. “But I think I can be a source of inspiration for others”. 25-year-old Luc Arsene Kouassi, agrees: “I think I do inspire others. I spend a lot of time with young children in my family who often see me swimming. They were proud to see me head off to the All Africa games in Maputo last year.” Both Luc and Franck took up swimming at an early age as a way to deal with childhood asthma. They’ve hardly left the water since. “I hope the authorities can do everything possible to help us make the most of things”, says Franck. “I think the future is bright – we can build Ivory Coast into a place full of love and peace.”
