{ BELGIUM’S SEAFRONT } côte of many colours Where can you can eat drink and stay in Belgium while enjoying a fine view of the coast? Sally Tipper reports from the country’s small yet perfectly formed seafront la côte colorée Où manger et boire un verre en Belgique tout en se délectant de magnifiques vues sur la côte ? Sally Tipper fait un tour du littoral de ce pays, petit de taille, certes, mais grand par ses attraits Even the tourist office has panoramic views of the beach I L t <strong>may</strong> be just 65km long, but Belgium’s coast has a lot to offer. Each of its dozen or so resorts has its own character, and eating, drinking and accommodation options beside the sea are as varied as the towns themselves. Nearest the Dutch border is Knokke, with its wide and busy streets. Turn left out of the train station and follow the main commercial artery, Lippenslaan, and in no time you’ll see the sea. Even the tourist office has panoramic views of the beach, and here you can pick up tips on where to eat, drink and spend the day and night. As you head west along Zeedijk-Albertstrand, you pass clusters of beachside tables belonging to the bars and restaurants across the road, with waiters dodging the traffic to serve food and drinks. Brasserie The Beach (552 Zeedijk, beach-knokke.be) specialises in seafood, as well it might given its position. Lucy Chang (563 Zeedijk) is one of a reliable chain of Asian restaurants that offers generous portions of eastern favourites including steaming bowls of noodle soup and Thai fishcakes bursting with oriental flavours. Liliane Ice-Bar (539 Zeedijk) does a roaring trade in ice creams, which can be enjoyed as you stroll along the promenade or with a cup of tea on the blue-and-white-striped chairs facing out to sea. Elsewhere, Tapasta (523 Zeedijk, tapastabar.com) should have something to suit the whole family: tapas and pasta, yes, but also a cocktail menu and plenty of child-friendly pizzas and puddings. Set back from the seafront, among the dunes at Heist, you’ll find De Raan (299a Zeedijk), a brasserie serving favourite Belgian seafood, meat and fish dishes – with plenty of beer – and a raised terrace on which to enjoy them. De Coqisserie Guesthouse in the grand old resort of De Haan (29 Koninglijke Baan, decoqisserie.be) has four rooms and three apartments, just 20 metres from the sea. Here you can combine the service and comfort of a hotel with the independence of your own living space, and all a stone’s throw from the beach. Knokke, avec ses larges avenues animées, est la plage la plus proche de la frontière hollandaise. Tournez à gauche dans la station et suivez la principale artère commerçante, Lippenslaan, très vite vous apercevrez la mer. L’Office de tourisme jouit même de vues panoramiques sur la plage. N’hésitez pas à venir y chercher de bonnes adresses pour sortir dîner, boire un verre et dénicher toutes sortes d’activités, diurnes ou nocturnes ! En vous dirigeant vers l’ouest, le long de la Zeedijk-Albertstrand, vous passerez devant des tables agencées face à la plage. Elles appartiennent aux établissements situés de l’autre côté de la route, et il n’est pas rare de voir les serveurs se faufiler à travers le trafic pour venir servir les clients. A déguster en balade ou autour d’une tasse de thé, devant la mer, dans une chaise longue à rayures bleues et blanches. Un peu plus loin, Tapasta (523 Zeedijk, tapastabar.com) devrait faire le bonheur de toute la famille, avec un assortiment de tapas et de pâtes. Jetez aussi un œil à sa carte de cocktails ainsi qu’à ses pizzas taille enfant et ses puddings.
