estled in the bend where Africa’s western outcrop segues into mainland, Cameroon is host to the overwhelming majority of the continent’s plant and animal species. Verdant forests, black sand beaches, red deserts and rugged mountain ranges teem with the unparalleled biodiversity of more than 900 bird and animal species and 9,000 plant varieties. More than 80 per cent of Africa’s primate species and 90 per cent of the continent’s ecosystems flourish in Cameroon. It is unlikely to escape notice by tourists for much longer. Indeed, thanks to an improved economic outlook, Cameroon is experiencing an influx of business travellers, and the tourism industry is responding with more options geared toward this clientele, particularly in and around its two largest cities. These efforts, coupled with increased air service to Yaoundé and Douala, which drastically reduces travel time for intercontinental travellers, mean there’s never been a better time to visit. Known as the city of seven hills, Yaoundé was settled in the late 1880s by German traders and became the capital of French Cameroon in 1922. The city is now both international and metropolitan, boasting a vibrant expatriate community among its 1.4 million residents. Surrounding areas remain remarkably undisturbed by industrialisation, and even inside the city a movement towards conservation and environmental responsibility has protected Yaoundé’s green spaces and wildlife areas. Within the city, travellers can join Yaoundé’s fitness-crazed citizens at Mont Fébé – a veritable outdoor gymnasium on the city’s north-east side. Rising about 1,200 metres, Mont Fébé is well worth the ascent. Its summit affords an incomparable view of Yaoundé’s sprawling quartiers. Trees, plants and yellow flowers, protected by conservation schemes, add rich texture to the rough-hewn walls lining Mont Fébé’s trails. Although open at all times, travellers should exercise caution after dusk. Across town in quartier Melen, Mvog-Betsi Zoo makes for another pleasant day trip.
