Vivian Cheruiyot Africa’s most successful country in the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics, Kenya racked up an impressive 14 medals and came in at number 15 in the overall rankings. Expectations are high for a repeat performance at the London Games this summer – and few people will have to shoulder the responsibility more than Vivian Cheruiyot. The 28-year-old long-distance runner won both the 5,000m and the 10,000m at the 2011 world championships in South Korea – triumphs for which she earned the prestigious accolade of Laureus Sportswoman of the Year. Cheruiyot has a lot to prove this year. She came in fifth in the 5,000m in China, only a year after she’d got gold in the same distance at the World Athletics Final in Stuttgart, Germany. “I think winning three world titles in 2011 has definitely increased the interest in me,” says Cheruiyot, who also claimed the world cross-country title last year. “I now get a lot of journalists and photographers asking to visit me in Kenya. This can put extra pressure on you but I have no problem with it. As long as I work hard in training I know I will race well. En effet, le pays compte bien réitérer ses bons scores – et Vivian Cheruiyot fait partie de ces quelques personnes qui devront endosser la responsabilité de mener sa nation au succès. A 28 ans, cette coureuse de fond a remporté les deux épreuves du 5.000 m et du 10.000 m aux Championnats du monde de Corée du Sud, en 2011, ce qui lui a valu l’honneur d’être désignée « Meilleure sportive de l’année ». Il reste cependant à Cheruiyot beaucoup à prouver cette année.
