{ EUROPE’S COUNTRY HOMES } grand redesigns In the last century, many of Europe’s great houses slipped into painful decline. Now their august halls are being re-imagined for a modern age, finds Sally Howard grands desseins Au siècle dernier, de nombreuses grandes demeures d’Europe connurent un triste déclin forcé. Brideshead Revisited, roman classique de Waugh publié en 1945, immortalise les mielleuses journées d’automne de l’aristocratie britannique : une vie sans trouble, faite de grandes promenades et de croquet sur des pelouses impeccables qui seront cependant rapidement piétinées sous les pas de la modernité. Waugh a achevé son roman en 1944. Tandis que la seconde guerre mondiale s’achève dans le sang, ces nobles bastides de campagne qu’il adorait sombrent peu à peu. Les revenus fonciers ont disparu, les hommes sont morts au combat. Le Brideshead de l’Angleterre ne sera plus jamais comme avant. Et il en va de même pour les châteaux de contes de fées en Aquitaine française ou les schlösser d’une Allemagne dévastée. Depuis lors toutefois, au fil des décennies, beaucoup de ces nobles demeures d’Europe ont vu leur destin réinventé. Leurs propriétaires ont appris à gagner leur vie avec nos économies de roturiers : agritourisme, restaurants étoilés, musées et attractions historiques, sans oublier bien sûr un essaim d’hôtels Heritage – où l’on peut aujourd’hui poser la tête sur des draps de coton égyptien, là même où Henry VIII s’endormit une nuit, abandonnant à ses songes les décapitations de ses épouses. Musées Le musée est une des premières voies de reconversion de ces grandes et vastes demeures, riches de collections du passé. Le château d’Hohenzollern (Baden-Wurttemberg, tél. 49 7471 2428) aux abords de Stuttgart, est une bâtisse de contes de fées, avec ses tourelles néogothiques, ses passages secrets et ses parloirs flamboyants ornés de porcelaine fine et de métaux précieux. Il fut construit comme mémorial familial par Wilheim IV de Prusse, à la fin du 19e siècle. The landed incomes had gone, the men had died at war. England’s Bridesheads would never be the same again. And neither would the fairytale châteaux of France’s Aquitaine or the schlösser of a devastated Germany. In the intervening decades, however, many of Europe’s great homes have been reinvented. They now earn their keep from our plebeian pockets: via horticultural tourism and Michelin-starred restaurants, museums and, of course, a blossoming of heritage hotels – you can now lay your head on Egyptian cottons where Henry VIII once slept off his spousal beheadings. Museums An early route for great houses with suitably grand interiors and collections of artefacts was to convert into a museum. Hohenzollern Castle (Baden- Wurttemberg, tel. +49 7471 2428) outside Stuttgart, is a fairytale of neo-gothic turrets, secret passageways and flamboyant parlours overspilling with fine china and precious metals that was built as a family memorial by Wilheim IV of Prussia in the late 19th century. Château de Castelnaud (tel. +33 553 313000, castelnaud.com/uk) is a 12th-century castle in France’s Périgord, one of the many built in the region during the 1337-1453 Hundred Years War.
