2 IMPLEMENTATION OF THE SURVEY
2.1 Sampling
Data for the SCSPA in Senegal were collected from a sample of health facilities. In each
facility, a sample of health service providers, a sample of sick children, and a sample of clients
of family planning services were selected.
The health facilities included in the sample were classified according to their managing
authority. They include the following facilities:
• public
• private
• private non-profit (non-governmental organization facilities)
• private religious
With a total of 3,084 health facilities (86 hospitals, 242 health centers, 1,250 health posts
and 1,506 health huts), the sample encompassed 50 percent of hospitals, 50 percent of health
centers including garrison medical centers (GMC), 20 percent of health posts including
infirmaries for prison and correctional institutions (PCI) and health huts related to the chosen
posts.
Table 2.1 presents the distribution of facilities in the final sample by region and Table
2.2 shows the distribution of surveyed facilities and their total number according to type,
managing authority, and region.
From a total of 458 facilities selected for the SCSPA 2012–2013, 438 were successfully
surveyed, for a response rate of 95.6 percent.
The sample of surveyed facilities includes 35 hospitals (5 percent), 64 health centers (8
percent), 265 health posts (87 percent), and 74 health huts.
More than three-quarters of facilities in the sample are in the public sector (83 percent),
while private facilities represent 17 percent.
The distribution of facilities within regions is not identical.
The regions of Dakar and Thiès alone represent a third of the sample with 20 percent and
13 percent respectively, while those of Kédougou (2 percent), Sédhiou (3 percent), Kaffrine (4
percent), Matam (5 percent), and Kolda (5 percent) have the lowest percentages. The
distribution is almost identical in the other seven regions, varying between 6 percent and 8
percent.
