Availability of Child Health Services
Table 3.6 describes the availability of child health services including curative care for
sick children, growth monitoring, and child vaccination, according to the type of facility,
managing authority, and region.
Nearly nine out of ten public facilities offer all three child health services (88 percent)
compared with only four in ten in the private sector (42 percent). A greater proportion of
health posts provide the three services—84 percent compared to 68 percent of health centers
and 30 percent of hospitals. Hospitals are referral facilities where the most frequently offered
service is curative care (82 percent). In contrast, for immunizations, health posts outperform
all the other facilities with 87 percent availability.
The availability of curative services and growth monitoring is better in nearby
facilities (health huts or posts), which is an asset for the population because of their
geographical and socio-cultural accessibility. Despite the fact that 97 percent of health huts
offer services for curative care and 87 percent provide growth monitoring services,
DPT/pentavalent vaccinations are only available at 45 percent of huts during outreach.
