3.9 HIV/AIDS and STI
STI
Table 3.20 shows the availability of guidelines and protocols, trained staff, and items
for STI services.
The results of the SCSPA 2012–2013 show that while almost all health facilities offer
treatment services for STIs (98 percent), guidelines and protocols are available in only 60
percent of facilities offering STI services.
There is widespread availability of the commodities and medicines essential for the
prevention and management of STIs, except for injectable ceftriaxone which is only available
in 21 percent of facilities offering STI services. In addition, only 35 percent of the staff is
trained in the treatment of STIs; this lack of training is most prevalent in Fatick (16 percent),
Kolda (17 percent), and Sédhiou (20 percent).
Rapid diagnostic tests for syphilis are only available in 1 percent of facilities offering
STI services.
Table 3.20 Guidelines, trained staff, and items for sexually transmitted infection services
readiness to provide STI services within the health facility assessment methodology proposed by WHO and USAID (2012).
1
Providers in the facility diagnose STIs or prescribe treatment for STIs or both.
2
At least one interviewed provider of STI services reported receiving in-service training on STI diagnosis and treatment during the 24 months
preceding the survey. The training must have involved structured sessions; it does not include individual instruction that a provider might have
received during routine supervision.
