3.5 Distribution of Staff in the Institutions Surveyed
Normally, each health facility should have a minimum number of providers assigned
to it, depending on the level of complexity of the services offered. Table 3.5 shows the
median number of providers employed by or assigned to the facility according to the type of
provider and type of facility.
The SCSPA showed that hospitals and health centers have the largest number, most
varied, and most qualified staffing. Type 1 providers, comprised of doctors who are general
practitioners, specialists, and surgeons, and those from Type 2, comprised of senior
technicians, are specifically found at hospitals and health centers. Type 3 providers, including
nurses, nursing assistants, and midwives are found in all structures except at health huts.
Community staff, representing Type 5, groups all community health workers (CHW) who are
generally found in the health centers, posts, and huts. On the other hand, Type 4 providers,
encompassing pharmacists and biologists, are only available in hospitals.
3.6 Child Health Services
Senegal, through the Ministry of Health and Social Action, has made significant
efforts to reduce infant and child mortality. With regard to the level of indicators in the 2010–
2011 DHS, the health status of children remains a concern, particularly that of the newborn
despite a gradual improvement. The SCSPA 2012–2013 was used to assess the following:
• availability of child health services
• frequency of availability of curative care for sick children and child growth
monitoring services
• frequency of availability of child immunization services
• availability of vaccines
