Percentage of Facilities Which Offered Emergency Obstetric Care for at Least the Last
Three Months
Table 3.19 presents, for health facilities offering delivery services, the signal
functions performed in cases of emergency obstetric care.
During the three months preceding the survey, a blood transfusion was performed in
only 2 percent of all facilities offering delivery services. This service was performed most
often in hospitals (40 percent) and rarely in health centers (2 percent). Caesarean sections
were performed in 5 percent of facilities during the same period, but much more frequently in
the private sector (41 percent) than in the public (3 percent).
Essential functions that were carried out in the facilities providing normal delivery
services included the parenteral application of antibiotics (75 percent) and oxytocic drugs (97
percent), assisted vaginal delivery (98 percent), manual removal of the placenta (73 percent),
manual aspiration (72 percent), and neonatal resuscitation (68 percent).
