KH628 is an elective in-depth study of the Christianisation of Norway in the Viking Age.<br />

Studiekrav<br />

The student is required to<br />

- write an article (consisting of 2800-maximum 4000 words), subject for the article is to be agreed upon with the course tutor,<br />

- submit a draft consisting of subject, problem and data for the article,<br />

- write a book report/analysis from the reading list (consisting of 1000-1200 words),<br />

- give an evaluation of the course and the teaching if the course is chosen for it the semester in question.<br />

Vurdering<br />

To gain credits for the course the student has to pass all the course works/¬assignments. Finally, the article will be assessed with a<br />

grade (A-F).<br />

Mål og innhold<br />

The aim with this course is to gain a comprehensive perspective on the different stages of the Christianisation of Norway during the<br />

Viking Age, within the perspective of the cultural relation of the Norwegians to Christian centres in Europe.<br />

The student is expected to obtain<br />

- thorough knowledge about the main outline of the recent scholarly debate on the expansion of Christianity in the Northern Europe<br />

between app. 800 - 1050,<br />

- thorough knowledge about the distinguishing features of Christian faith and life (praxis), with a particular focus on the Christian<br />

culture on the British isles in the same period of time,<br />

- thorough knowledge about the relationship between Christianity's expansion to Norway, and transformation of society and culture,<br />

- thorough knowledge about the tension between conceptions and praxis of pre-Christian religion and the Christian faith and cult in its<br />

early stage in Norway.<br />
