O Mondego foi, durante centenas de anos, a
principal via de comunicação entre as populações
do interior e do litoral. A inexistência de soluções
ferroviárias/rodoviárias e a rapidez e baixo custo
do transporte fluvial transformaram o Mondego,
no responsável principal pela subsistência e
economia das populações por ele banhadas.
Muito por causa destes fatores, surgiu a Barca
Serrana que assumia, neste contexto, um papel
de destaque, encontrando-se no centro das mais
importantes atividades económicas e comerciais
da bacia do Mondego.
For hundreds of years, the Mondego was the
main means of communication between the
populations of the interior and the coast. The lack
of rail/road solutions and the speed and low cost
of river transport made the Mondego the main
responsible for the subsistence and economy of
the populations bordering it. It was largely because
of these factors that Barca Serrana emerged and
took on a prominent role, being at the centre of
the most important economic and commercial
activities in the Mondego basin.
