Novos Olhares

Situated in a dominant position above the town,
on the right bank of the Mondego River, the
Castle of Montemor-o-Velho, in the context of
the assertion of nationality, was part of the socalled
“Mondego Line”, of which it was the most
important fortification, having been one of the
largest in the kingdom at the time. Its military and
strategic importance was maintained throughout
the following centuries, and its command was
always exercised by leading figures of the kingdom’s
nobility.
