Glossary<br />

We use a lot of terms you may not be familiar with in this guide, so<br />

here are some simple definitions <strong>to</strong> help you out.<br />

Affiliate: A publisher or site owner that forwards qualified web traffic <strong>to</strong> an<br />

online merchant on a pay-for-performance basis is called an affiliate in the<br />

context of online marketing.<br />

Affiliate Links: A universal (uniform) resource loca<strong>to</strong>r (URL) that includes<br />

an affiliate’s identification number and additional information that <strong>make</strong>s it<br />

easier for merchants <strong>to</strong> track affiliate activity is an affiliate link.<br />

Amazon: In the retail context, Amazon is a multi-national online retailer<br />

with a market capitalization in excess of $128 billion U.S. as of January<br />

2013. Amazon also hosts a marketplace wherein other Internet purveyors<br />

may display and sell products, and offers several software-as-a-service and<br />

infrastructure-as-a-service solutions for business.<br />

Application Programming Interface (API): An API is a pro<strong>to</strong>col created<br />

<strong>to</strong> allow separate software solutions <strong>to</strong> communicate over a relatively simple<br />

interface. Developers will often use APIs <strong>to</strong> connect or integrate systems and<br />

services.<br />

Authorization: A payment card transaction performed specifically <strong>to</strong><br />

determine if the payment account has sufficient funds <strong>to</strong> complete a given<br />

transaction.<br />

Authorized Distribu<strong>to</strong>r: A manufacturer-approved or -designated<br />

distribu<strong>to</strong>r able <strong>to</strong> sell products in quantity <strong>to</strong> commercial cus<strong>to</strong>mers like<br />

Internet retailers.<br />

Authorized Retailer: A manufacturer-approved or -designated retailer able<br />

<strong>to</strong> sell products directly <strong>to</strong> consumers.<br />

Better Business Bureau: A non-profit organization in Canada and the<br />

United States that is focused on trust in advertising. The organization<br />

responds <strong>to</strong> consumer inquiries about business reliability, and accredits<br />

businesses. Accredited online merchants may display a Better Business<br />

Bureau badge.<br />
