Abstract
Background and objectives
3
The ventouse has become the vaginal operative device of first choice. The
KiwiOmniCup is a vacuum extraction device for disposable use with an
integral hand-held pump. One of this obstetric device’s major advantages
is that it is not only quick and does not require additional external vacuum
generation, but it also allows for the internal rotation of the foetal head.
This study aimed at comparing the security profile of this device in terms
of maternal and neonatal damage and injuries with that of conventional
ventouses. Furthermore, the study focussed on the rate of successful
deliveries with these devices, respectively.
Methods
We analysed a total of 217 vacuum extractions conducted at the
Gynaecological Clinic of the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg from 2003 to
2005. 79 of these (37%) used conventional vacuum extraction and 138
(63%) of them applied the KiwiOmniCup device.
Data on the delivery process, diagnoses and complications as well as on
the applied extraction device were gathered by means of a standardized
protocol. Postpartally, maternal and foetal injuries were analysed in order
to assess the security profile of both devices.
Results
Based on the gathered data we obtained the following results:
1. The rate of episiotomies was thus significantly higher in vaginal
operative deliveries by means of conventional vacuum extraction
(p0,05).
