When <strong>the</strong> Buchenwald concentration camp was liberated by <strong>the</strong><br />

Americans in April 1945, 2,662 Czechoslovak prisoners were found<br />

still alive.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> concentration camp Oswiecim nearly 60,000 Czechoslovak'<br />

nationals were prisoners in <strong>the</strong> period between April 1942 and<br />

April 1944.<br />

A report <strong>of</strong> October 1943 about Dachau concentration camp puts<br />

<strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> Czechoslovak nationals at 1,500. Perhaps <strong>the</strong> figure<br />

given in that report for October 1943 about <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r nationalities<br />

may convey a picture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> proportion <strong>of</strong> Czech nationals valid for<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r times:<br />

Germans: 400 political<br />

1,000 "Berufsverbrecher"<br />

800 Workshy, anti-social and<br />

Bible Students.<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r 400 Belgians<br />

nationalities: 500 Frenchmen<br />

300 Dutch<br />

300 Norwegians<br />

1,500 Czechs<br />

800 Catholic Priests <strong>of</strong> variob<br />

nationalities.<br />

6,000 or more Poles and Russians.<br />

Some 2,200 relatives <strong>of</strong> persons who took refuge mainly in Great<br />

Britain were deported to <strong>the</strong> concentration camp at SvatoboEice in<br />

Moravia and remained <strong>the</strong>re during <strong>the</strong> whole time <strong>of</strong> occupation.<br />

2. Criminal Courts.<br />

(a) The People's Court (Volksgerichtsh<strong>of</strong>)<br />

The Czechoslovak Republic was, as pointed out in previous parts,<br />

<strong>of</strong> this report, not only occupied, but entirely annexed by <strong>the</strong> Ger-<br />

man Reich. Especially <strong>the</strong> Decree <strong>of</strong> 16.3.1939 (RGBl.I,p.485)<br />

(Annex 1) only insufficiently veils <strong>the</strong> fact that it orders <strong>the</strong><br />

annexation <strong>of</strong> those parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Republic which remained unoccupied<br />

after <strong>the</strong> dictate <strong>of</strong> Munich.<br />

The resistance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Czechoslovak people against this annexation<br />

was fought by various means. The People's Court was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
