WEISMANN informed <strong>the</strong> firing squad that it was <strong>the</strong> will <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Fuehrer <strong>the</strong>y were about to carry out.<br />

From <strong>the</strong> Horak farm <strong>the</strong> men were led out into <strong>the</strong> garden<br />

behind <strong>the</strong> barn in tens and shot. The massacres lasted from morning<br />

until 4 o'clock in <strong>the</strong> afternoon. Afterwards <strong>the</strong> executioners had<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves photographed with <strong>the</strong> corpses on <strong>the</strong> execution ground.<br />

The pictures show both boys and older men. They show that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

had put straw on <strong>the</strong> wall so that <strong>the</strong> bullets should not rebound.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> same time, 7 o'clock in <strong>the</strong> morning, <strong>the</strong> first building,<br />

belonging to HLIM, on <strong>the</strong> road to Hostoun, was set on fire and after<br />

that one house after ano<strong>the</strong>r was burned to <strong>the</strong> ground by <strong>the</strong><br />

Gestapo. They brought two barrels <strong>of</strong> petrol and in front <strong>of</strong> each<br />

house poured out a pailful to light <strong>the</strong> fires.<br />

On June-llth, 20 Jews came from Terezin who had to dig graves<br />

near <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> execution and throw in <strong>the</strong> corpses head to toe and<br />

side by side. Afterwards quicklime was poured over <strong>the</strong> corpses<br />

which were <strong>the</strong>n covered by boards. Then <strong>the</strong> corpses taken from<br />

<strong>the</strong> cemetery were placed in <strong>the</strong> same graves and <strong>the</strong> cemetery<br />

wiped out. ,<br />

On June 12th, German pioneers fitted into <strong>the</strong> walls <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

centuries old church <strong>of</strong> St. Martin, explosive charges. Sgt. Jan<br />

STRUED who acted as liaison <strong>of</strong>ficer once more called <strong>the</strong> Gestapo<br />

from Kladno to watch <strong>the</strong> complete destruction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ancient<br />

church.-A few months later fields covered <strong>the</strong> ground where<br />

Lidice had stood.<br />

The fate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> men <strong>of</strong> Lidice has been described. 172 men and<br />

youths from 16 years upwards were shot on June loth, 1942. Ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

19 who worked in coalmines <strong>of</strong> Kladno on June 9th and loth, were<br />

later arrested in <strong>the</strong> collieries or in <strong>the</strong> nearby woods, taken to<br />

Prague and shot.<br />

7 women from idi ice-were shot in Prague as well. The o<strong>the</strong>rs,<br />

<strong>the</strong> remaining 195 were deported to <strong>the</strong> Ravensbriick concentration<br />

camp: 42 died from ill-treatment, 7 were gassed and 3 are missing.<br />

4 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se'women were taken from Lidice to a. maternity home in<br />

Prague, <strong>the</strong>ir newly born children murdered and <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>the</strong>n<br />

sent to Ravensbriick.<br />

The children <strong>of</strong> Lidice were taken from <strong>the</strong>ir mo<strong>the</strong>rs a few days<br />

after <strong>the</strong> destruction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> village. 90 were sent to Lodi in Poland<br />

and from <strong>the</strong>re to Gneisenau concentration camp (in <strong>the</strong> so-called
