Abstract
Abstract
This study shows that an integration of users into the producer innovation process can
considerably contribute to the success of innovation projects. This is particularly the case if
basic innovations are to be achieved or if the innovation process is characterized by a dynamic
change of demand conditions as well as by high market uncertainties. With the selection of
users and their integration into the producer innovation process, it has to be clarified what
should be their function and role (formulating requirements, providing ideas, testing products,
etc.). And it has to be taken into consideration that, depending on the respective innovation task,
involvement of different users will be appropriate. User integration is hence a major success
factor in the producer innovation process. It presupposes, however, a differentiated perspective
as well as purposive consideration of success conditions.
The sustainability contribution of innovation projects can be significantly supported by selective
integration of users. Three crucial approaches for a sustainable user integration into the
innovation process can be identified: (1) development and evaluation of sustainability-oriented
innovation ideas and concepts with the help of the lead-user method, (2) having prototypes and
pilot applications tested and evaluated by pilot customers in realistic application situations, with
taking sustainability criteria into account, and (3) cooperation with sustainability leaders who
will operate as first adopters and reference customers when an innovation is introduced to the
market.
Internet and mobile online media open up new possibilities of integrating users into the
innovation process, above all in consumer markets and markets with high customer numbers.
The new, powerful methods of internet-supported integration of users into the innovation
process will, however, contribute to sustainable products and user systems only if the innovation
actors involved take competition-relevant sustainability requirements into account and
sustainability becomes an integral part of innovation culture.
