CHAPTER 2<br />

DUAL STATOR WINDING INDUCTION MACHINE<br />

DESIGN<br />

2.1 Introduction<br />

The <strong>dual</strong> <strong>stator</strong> <strong>winding</strong> <strong>induction</strong> machine (DSWIM) under taken in this research has<br />

the normal squirrel cage rotor design <strong>an</strong>d st<strong>an</strong>dard <strong>stator</strong> laminations. As a result, the<br />

same squirrel cage rotor, which is used in the normal single <strong>stator</strong> <strong>winding</strong> <strong>induction</strong><br />

machine, c<strong>an</strong> be shared by the <strong>dual</strong> <strong>stator</strong> <strong>winding</strong> <strong>induction</strong> machine without <strong>an</strong>y<br />

modification. Then a design <strong>of</strong> the <strong>dual</strong> <strong>stator</strong> <strong>winding</strong> <strong>induction</strong> machine using the<br />

existed st<strong>an</strong>dard single <strong>stator</strong> <strong>winding</strong> <strong>induction</strong> machine frame c<strong>an</strong> greatly reduced the<br />

cost <strong>of</strong> this new machine.<br />

In this chapter, a <strong>dual</strong> <strong>stator</strong>-<strong>winding</strong> machine is designed using the <strong>stator</strong> frame <strong>of</strong> a<br />

st<strong>an</strong>dard 3-hp <strong>induction</strong> machine. The same rotor as the one for the st<strong>an</strong>dard 3-hp<br />

<strong>induction</strong> machine is utilized in the <strong>dual</strong> <strong>stator</strong> <strong>winding</strong> machine. Since the <strong>stator</strong> <strong>an</strong>d<br />

rotor dimensions, which are the import<strong>an</strong>t parameters in the machine design, are already<br />

known, the design progress is different from the one based on unknown <strong>stator</strong> <strong>an</strong>d rotor<br />

dimensions.<br />

This chapter is org<strong>an</strong>ized as follows. In Section 2.2, two <strong>stator</strong> <strong>winding</strong><br />

configurations are compared <strong>an</strong>d the one has two independent <strong>stator</strong> <strong>winding</strong> sets is<br />

chosen in this design. Then <strong>an</strong> air gap flux densities determination process is given based<br />
