on the const<strong>an</strong>t peak air gap flux density constraint <strong>an</strong>d the const<strong>an</strong>t yoke flux linkage<br />

constraint, in which the peak value <strong>of</strong> the air gap flux density <strong>an</strong>d the <strong>stator</strong> yoke flux<br />

linkage value <strong>of</strong> the designed <strong>dual</strong> <strong>stator</strong> <strong>winding</strong> <strong>induction</strong> machine are required to be<br />

the same as those for the st<strong>an</strong>dard single <strong>winding</strong> <strong>induction</strong> machine. A power estimation<br />

<strong>of</strong> the designed machine is given in the last part <strong>of</strong> Section 2.2. A detailed process <strong>of</strong> the<br />

machine parameter estimation is given in Section 2.3. If the two <strong>stator</strong> <strong>winding</strong> sets are<br />

connected to PWM converters <strong>an</strong>d controlled using the vector control scheme, the<br />

magnitude <strong>an</strong>d the frequency <strong>of</strong> the air gap flux density <strong>of</strong> each <strong>winding</strong> set c<strong>an</strong> be<br />

controlled independently. The saturation <strong>of</strong> the <strong>dual</strong> <strong>stator</strong> <strong>winding</strong> <strong>induction</strong> machine<br />

c<strong>an</strong> be reduced, if the phase <strong>an</strong>gles <strong>of</strong> the air gap flux densities <strong>of</strong> two <strong>stator</strong> <strong>winding</strong> set<br />

are 180 degrees apart from each other, which is also called “out <strong>of</strong> phase” in some<br />

publications. At this condition, the <strong>stator</strong> frame is fully used <strong>an</strong>d the output power <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>dual</strong> <strong>stator</strong> <strong>winding</strong> <strong>induction</strong> machine c<strong>an</strong> be increased. A design procedure <strong>of</strong> the <strong>dual</strong><br />

<strong>winding</strong> <strong>induction</strong> machine working under this condition is given in Section 2.4. The<br />

conclusions are included in Section 2.5.<br />

The st<strong>an</strong>dard 3-hp 4-pole <strong>induction</strong> machine, which provided by A. O. Smith<br />

Electrical Products Comp<strong>an</strong>y, is rewound to be a prototype <strong>of</strong> the <strong>dual</strong> <strong>winding</strong> <strong>induction</strong><br />

machine having the pole combination 2/6.<br />

Some known parameters <strong>of</strong> the machine are shown in Table 2.1.<br />
