wheel makes one revolution per cycle <strong>of</strong> ring<br />

Couplings<br />

11. Five flexible couplings are used to interconnect<br />

the units <strong>of</strong> the drive and to couple the drive assembly to the<br />

driven projectile ring worm gear. These are <strong>of</strong> commercLaI .design<br />

and manufacture, <strong>of</strong> three different types, with installed<br />

arrangements as shown on drawing 271675. .<br />

(a) AuxiZiary pump coupling. - A Falk Steelflex<br />

coupling provides direct drive coupling from<br />

the electric motor rotor shaft to the auxiliary<br />

pump rotor shaft. The unit is enclosed with-cin<br />

the electric motor end housing. It is an<br />

assembly <strong>of</strong> two identical steel hubs, a spe.~<br />

cially heat treated and tempered alloy st.eeL<br />

grid spring, and two duplicate steel shells<br />

which form the cover. The design gives drive<br />

connection through the grid spring whi.ch . is<br />

nested in grooves that are accurately milled<br />

in the outer flange <strong>of</strong> each hub ; . The hubs<br />

and grid spaces are packed with lubricant confined<br />

within the steel shells. The unt.t is<br />

designated by the manufacturer as: - Falk size<br />

(b) A~end c ou p t ing. - A Falk Steelflex coupling<br />

<strong>of</strong> the same design as the above provides direct<br />

coupling from the electric motor r-ot.or- shaft;<br />

to the A-end shaft. This unit isdesignatgd<br />

by the manufacturer as: - Falk size' 9 FAS. '<br />

(C) B-end response coupZing. - A special coupling<br />

<strong>of</strong> Oldham type provides the response drive<br />

connection to the control cam shaft. This<br />

design incorporates a floating center member,<br />

constrained to slide across the face <strong>of</strong> one<br />

coupling flange on,a Ilne passing through the<br />

center. At the same time this center member<br />

is free to slide across the face <strong>of</strong> the second<br />

flange in a direction at right angles to the<br />

first. The block-shaped center piece is equipped<br />

with special removablegraphite-impregnated<br />

bearing strips which, together with grease<br />

reservoir (in the block), provides primary and<br />

secondary lubrication. The coupling is an<br />

American Flexible Coupling Co., size 8-1/2,<br />

unit.
