37.1 Conjuctions
Chapter 37: Conjuctions/Συδέσμοι
Conjuctions are words which connect two sentences and making texts more fluent. For example connecting a main clause and a subclause.
Φερειπείν
Yesterday I went to Nicosia because I had a job interview.
Tomorrow I will go to work and after I get off work I will go shopping.
37.2 Τζ’αι/τζ’ι = and
Like many languages the single most common conjuction found is of course ‘and’ and this in Greekcypriot is ‘τζ’αι’. This conjuction is not
used at the start of sentences and takes the case carried by the verb affecting the two nouns or pronouns.
Ο Γιώρκος τζ’αι/τζ’ι η Μαρία επαντρευτήκαν.
George and Mary got married.
Χιέλω την κουρτέλλαν τζ’αι/τζ’ι την πρότσαν.
I want the knife and the fork.
37.3 Γιατί/Επειδήτις/Επειδής/Διότι/Διότις = Because
Another very common conjuction in Greekcypriot, and as you can see with numerous forms, of course is ‘γιατί/επειδής/επειδή/διότις/διότι’
all of which mean ‘because’. It takes no case.
Πρέπει ναν πολλά εχούμενος γιατί/επειδής/επειδήτις/διότις/διότι έσ’ει πολλά ριάλγια.
He must be very rich because he has a lot of cars.
Επήα έσσο γιατί/επειδής/επειδήτις/διότις/διότι εβαρέθηκα να χωρκογυρίζω.
I went home because I got bored of walking around.
37.4 Ώστοι να/ώσπου να = By the time that/Until + phrases
This conjuction carries the meaning of the english ‘until’ and takes the subjunctive.
Ώστι να φκώ που το πάνιον κάμε μου έναν καφέν.
By the I get out of the shower make me a coffee.
Ώσπου να ρτει καρτέρα τον δαμαί.
Until he comes wait for him here.
37.5 Λοιπόν/το λοιπόν
This word is used mainly at the start of the sentence as a conjuction. It’s exact translation can be hard. It’s always used after a lot of
discussion has already taken place and it is coming to an end. It implies that you have taken a decision or you want to make your self
heard. It has no translation in English as far as I know.
Το λοιπόν, εννά κάτσω να θκιεβάσω. Κάμετε ησυχίαν.
Listen up, I’m going to study. Be quiet!
Λοιπόν, άκου να σου πώ.
Hey, listen up.
37.6 Ή/γιά/είτε = Or
The conjunctions γιά/είτε/ή mean ‘or’.
Φερειπείν
Χιέλω τούτον ή τζ’είνον.
I want this or that.
Πάει ειστό σκολείον γιά ειστό νοσοκομείον.
He is going to school or to the hospital.
Εσύντησ’εν του Νίκου είτε του Μιχάλη. Εν ιξέρω.
He spoke to Nicos or Michael. I don’t know.
Άθκηεν γιά/ή εμάρανεν;
Has is blossomed or has its wilt?
37.7 Οξά - Or
The conjuctions ‘οξά’ means ‘or’. This particle is only used in QUESTIONS.
