Chapter 28: The Passive: Aorist – Παθητική Φωνή: Αόριστος
28.1 The Aorist and Forming the Aorist
Forming the Aorist forms of verbs in the Passive can be somewhat challenging as with verbs in the Active voice. The form of each verb
depends on its stem rather than on its Present Tense ending. Remember the Aorist refers to an act that was completed in the past.
The summed up rule for forming the Passive Aorist is as follows:
Prefix ‘ε-‘*+ Verb + Suffix + Tone mark change (3 rd to last syllable)
Προθεση ‘ε-‘* + Ρήμαν + Κατάληξη + Αλλαγή τόνου (πρόπαραληγουσα)
* Unless the Verb already starts with a vowel!
28.2 1 st Category
I. -εύκουμαι/-εφκουμαι
Drop the -εύκουμαι/-εφκουμαι endings and add the prefix ε- and the suffix –έφτηκα.
Φερειπείν
Δουλεύκουμαι -> ε- + δουλε + φτηκα -> εδουλέφτηκα
Γυρεύκουμαι -> ε- + γυρε + φτηκα -> εγυρέφτηκα
Κουρσεύκουμαι -> ε- + κουρσε + φτηκα -> εκουρσέφτηκα
Irregularity
Κόφκουμαι -> ε- + κό +πηκα -> εκόπηκα
II. –ννουμαι
Drop the –ννουμαι and add the prefix ε- and the suffix –στηκα/-ώθηκα. Tone mark on the 3 rd to last syllable.
-ώννουμαι/-ήννουμαι/ -> θηκα
Φερειπείν
Αναμώννουμαι -> ε- + αναμώ + -θηκα -> αναμώθηκα (since there already is a vowel prefix the ε- is not added)
Αππώννουμαι -> ε- + αππώ + -θηκα -> αππώθηκα
Κατσαφαλώννουμαι -> ε- + κατσαφαλώ + -θηκα -> εκατσαφαλώθηκα
Στήννουμαι -> ε- + στή + -θηκα -> εστήθηκα
-άννουμαι/-ύννουμαι -> άστηκα
Φερειπείν
Πκιάννουμαι -> ε- + πκιά + -στηκα -> επκιάστηκα
Φτύννουμαι -> ε- + φτύ + -σα -> εφτύστηκα
Irregularities
Δύννουμαι -> εδώθηκα
ντύννουμαι -> εντύθηκα
αφήννουμαι -> αφέθηκα
σβήννουμαι -> εσβήστηκα
ξηχάννουμαι -> εξιάστηκα
χάννουμαι -> εχάθηκα
Πίννουμαι -> επκιώθηκα
Σβήννουμαι ->εσβήστηκα
ΙΙΙ. –θουμαι
Drop the –θουμαι and add the prefix ε- and the suffix –στηκα. Tone mark on the 3 rd to last syllable.
Φερειπείν
Κλώθουμαι -> ε- + κλώ + -στηκα -> εκλώστηκα
Πλάθουμαι -> ε- + πλά + -στηκα -> επλάστηκα
Irregularity
Πλώθουμαι -> ε- + πλώ + -σα -> επλώθηκα
